Community Wellbeing Officer
Great opportunity for a community minded and passionate person to ensure the City of Darwin's libraries are spaces that recognise and welcome Darwin's most vulnerable community members, and that programs are created in response to community wellbeing and need.
City of Darwin Libraries deliver services to a resident population of over 80,000 as well as large numbers of temporary residents, travellers, and visitors. Across four libraries, the library employs approximately 40 staff who service nearly 500,000 visits per annum, maintain a collection of 80,000 items, and provide programs and activities that are attended by 37,000 people. Our Libraries provide a free, safe place to access information, relax out of the weather, charge devices, access free Wi-Fi and use computers.
About the role
The Community Wellbeing Officer is responsible for ensuring the delivery of library services to Darwin's most vulnerable people, including people experiencing homelessness and chronic mental health illnesses. This position also plays a role supporting other library staff to improve their own resilience in delivering services to Darwin's vulnerable population.
Reporting to Senior Coordinator Programs and Engagement, the key service deliverables include, but are not limited to:
- Establish referral and advise pathways for vulnerable people accessing libraries to relevant services including housing and homeless services, health providers and drug and alcohol support programs.
- Establish strong networks with the human services sector and promote the services available within libraries to vulnerable populations in Darwin.
- Develop and implement library-based programs in response to the needs of the community services sector and lived experience of vulnerable people.
- Engage with the most vulnerable people accessing library services to support them in accessing the full suite of library services in a manner which is sensitive to any barriers they may face in accessing services.
- Be the primary library contact for responding to incidents involving vulnerable people within libraries. Identify and implement relevant learning for library staff in providing skills to respond to the needs of the most vulnerable people accessing library services, with a particular emphasis on homeless people and people experiencing chronic mental illness.
- Review incidents occurring in libraries and collaborate with relevant teams to establish methods of working to reduce antisocial behaviours within libraries.
To be successful in the role you must have:
- Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Community Services/Social Work/Mental Health or other relevant qualification and/or equivalent experience.
- A minimum three (3) years' experience delivering services to vulnerable people, in particular people experiencing or at risk of homelessness or chronic mental health illness.
- Ability to obtain a National Police Records Check.
- Current NT Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card).
- Possession of a Class C driver licence.
- Flexibility to work at multiple library locations.
- Ability to work within a library roster, including evenings and weekends.
