Mental Health Support Worker, Male

As a Mental Health Support Worker with an NDIS provider, you will play a vital role in assisting participants with mental health challenges to lead fulfilling and independent lives. You will provide person-centered support tailored to their unique needs, helping them achieve their NDIS goals while fostering emotional well-being and social inclusion.
Key Responsibilities
Participant Support:
- Provide emotional and practical support to NDIS participants with mental health conditions.
- Assist with daily living activities, including personal care, meal preparation, and household tasks as required.
- Implement and follow individualized support plans in collaboration with participants and their support networks.
- Encourage independence, social engagement, and participation in community activities.
Mental Health & Well-being:
- Support participants in managing their mental health through coping strategies, emotional regulation, and crisis de-escalation techniques.
- Manage complex behaviours, including self-harm, and de-escalate property damage, managing PRN medications, and all documentation.
- Monitor participants' well-being and report any concerns to relevant professionals.
- Provide companionship, motivation, and positive reinforcement to enhance self-esteem and confidence.
- Effectively manage participants with complex behavioral needs, including verbal and physical aggression, absconding, manipulation, and property damage. Apply de-escalation techniques as outlined by the participant's allied health team.
- Implement and monitor approved restrictive practices (currently chemical restraints) in accordance with NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission guidelines and behavior support plans.
- Identify and arrange suitable housing that complies with all NDIS accommodation standards and safety requirements.
- Review and adhere to the participant's Behavior Support Plan (BSP), ensuring all strategies are followed consistently and progress is documented.
- Work closely with NDIS representatives, the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH), Child Protection, and the participant's support network to ensure continuity and quality of care.
- Maintain accurate records of incidents, progress notes, and participant updates in accordance with organizational and NDIS reporting standards.
Collaboration & Communication:
- Work closely with families, caregivers, therapists, and healthcare professionals to ensure holistic care.
- Maintain accurate records of support provided, incidents, and participant progress in line with NDIS compliance requirements.
- Advocate for participants' rights and ensure their voices are heard in decision-making.
Workplace & Safety Compliance:
- Adhere to NDIS Code of Conduct and organizational policies.
- Follow workplace health and safety protocols to ensure a safe environment for participants and staff.
- Recognize and respond appropriately to signs of distress, self-harm, or crisis situations.
Key Requirements
Essential:
- Certificate III, IV, or Diploma in Mental Health, Community Services, Disability Support, or a related field.
- Experience supporting individuals with mental health challenges or psychosocial disabilities.
- Understanding of trauma-informed care and person-centered approaches.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Valid First Aid & CPR certification.
- NDIS Worker Screening Check & Working with Children Check
- Experience supporting non-verbal individuals.
- Minimum 2 years of experience with complex behaviours
- Experience with working with self-harm behaviours
- Experience with property damage and reporting
- Australian Driver's License and access to a reliable vehicle (preferred).
Desirable:
- Experience working within the NDIS framework.
- Training in de-escalation techniques and crisis intervention.
- Multilingual skills or experience working with culturally diverse communities.

- Achieving Participants' Goals and Aspirations
- Working with Another Staff Member (if required)
- Managing Documentation – Shift notes, incident reports, and compliance records, medication documenation.
- Engaging in Outdoor Activities – Bush walks, visits to animal parks, and other recreational activities, connecting with Mother Nature out in the community, and video games such as Minecraft.
