The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking an Industry Officer - Maintenance to provide a critical role at Dame Phyllis Frost Centre.
About the Business Unit
The Corrections and Justice Services (CJS) group, comprising Corrections Victoria (CV), Justice Health and Justice Services, plays an integral role in developing safer and more resilient communities and in delivering a trusted justice and community safety system.
CV is responsible for the implementation of policies, programs and services that ensure the safe and secure containment of prisoners, and that seek to rehabilitate offenders by addressing the underlying causes of offending behaviour.
CV also sets strategy, policy and standards for the management of the state's system of correctional facilities whilst also developing programs for the management and rehabilitation of prisoners and the community-based supervision of offenders.
As part of the CJS group, the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre (DPFC) is a 567-bed medium to maximum-security facility for female offenders located within the West Metropolitan Area, Department of Justice and Community Safety.
About the Role
The Maintenance Team are responsible for the ongoing preventative and reactive maintenance of the Prison. The Maintenance Team are overseen by the Facilities Manager and are responsible for the maintenance or coordination of maintenance of the Prison's buildings, security systems, and ensuring the Prison adherence to OHS requirements. The position operates within a security environment and is responsible for maintaining the security of prisoners, contractors, staff and visitors.
The role will include supervising contractors undertaking various tasks/projects within the prison, and will involve weekend and public holiday work, remunerated in accordance with the applicable provision of the VPS Determination.
Some of your duties will include:
- Be responsible for the efficient and effective management of the maintenance of the Prison.
- Provide maintenance support to the Prison, including diagnostic advice regarding buildings, facilities, plant and equipment across the site.
- Liaise with contractors undertaking work at DPFC, including escorting those contractors, preparing Job Safety Analyses and assisting with OHS inductions.
- Ensure equipment is maintained in good working order, maintain general cleanliness of the work site, and ensure proper directions are given to prisoners concerning health and safety.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Previous experience in reactive and preventative maintenance.
- An aptitude for facility repairs.
- Competence in the use of basic hand and power tools.
- Demonstrated understanding of OHS and Work Health Safety.
- Ability to work unsupervised and manage multiple stakeholders and requests.
Qualifications/requirements
- Prison Officer pre-service training is essential
- A trade qualification is desirable
- Appointment may be subject to the completion of a pre-employment health assessment
