  • Play a key role in unlocking the value of world-class iron ore deposits across the Pilbara
  • Expand your expertise in geo-metallurgical processes across multiple operational sites
  • Be part of a globally recognised leader in mining automation and innovation

About the role

Finding better ways to provide the materials the world needs.

We're seeking a motivated and inquisitive Geoscientist to join our Mine Technical Services (MTS) team in Perth. In this full-time position, you'll support site-based mine geology teams across 2–3 locations, contributing to grade control processes that define the location and quality of our premium iron ore deposits.

Your work will directly influence the production of high-quality lump and fines products, while offering exposure to a variety of geo-metallurgical plant processes. You'll collaborate with a diverse group of internal stakeholders and participate in quarterly site visits (minimum), helping to ensure operational excellence and product consistency.

This is a unique opportunity to be part of the broader MTS Geoscience team, which oversees ore quality from drilling through to crushing, striving for optimal reconciliation between block models and final product outcomes.

Reporting to the Central Geoscience Superintendent, your responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting QAQC checks to identify and resolve issues
  • Performing site-based modelling using our 3D blockout methodology
  • Contributing to weekly and monthly grade control reconciliation
  • Supporting mine geology teams in safely maximising ore body value

What you will bring

You'll be joining a close-knit network of geoscientists supporting all Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) operations, where you'll build on your existing mine geology experience.

Required qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Geology or a related discipline
  • Valid C-class driver's licence
  • Prior experience in mine geology, ideally within iron ore
  • Familiarity with Vulcan software and the Microsoft Office suite
  • Proven ability to collect, validate, and interpret QAQC data (RC and blast hole) to support grade control
  • An understanding of mine production processes – block model to pit to plant to stockyard

Experience within RTIO is highly regarded, but what will truly set you apart is your proactive mindset, eagerness to learn, and commitment to continuous improvement.

If you are excited about this role and think you have what it takes but your experience doesn't align 100%, we still want to hear from you. We are committed to promoting diversity within Rio Tinto and as a special measure to we strongly encourage women to apply.

What we offer

Be recognised for your contribution, your thinking and your hard work, and go home knowing you have helped the world progress.

  • A work environment where safety is always the number one priority

  • Full relocation provided to Western Australia from elsewhere in Australia
  • A competitive base salary reflective of your skills and experience with annual incentive bonus
  • Comprehensive medical benefits including subsidised private health insurance for employees and immediate family
  • Attractive share ownership plan
  • Company provided insurance cover
  • Extensive salary sacrifice & salary packaging options
  • Career development & education assistance to further your technical or leadership ambitions
  • Ongoing access to family-friendly health and medical wellbeing support
  • Leave for all of life's reasons (vacation/annual, paid parental, sick leave, cultural leave)
  • To better suit different family needs, our paid parental leave approach gives all parents the option to take 18 weeks of paid leave after a new child arrives – at a time that suits them
