About the role
TAFE SA are seeking a Senior WHS Consultant to join the People & Culture team. The Work Health, Safety and Injury Management (WHSIM) Business Unit provides strategic and operational services to Executive, Directors, Faculty Deans, Managers and Staff and is responsible for work health and safety, wellbeing and injury prevention and management across all of TAFE SA.

Senior Consultant's WHS&W are responsible for providing specialist consultancy services, expertise, advice and support which contributes to the strategic objectives of TAFE SA.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert advice and deliver services in injury prevention and management, ensuring compliance with the WHS and RTW Acts, Regulations, Codes of Practice, standards, policies, procedures, and operating instructions aligned to TAFE SA business functions.
  • Lead and manage strategic WHS and Wellbeing projects that reduce risk, support compliance, and promote a safe environment for staff and students.
  • Monitor and report on WHS and Wellbeing trends and risks, supporting the development of targeted mitigation strategies across TAFE SA.
  • Maintain current knowledge of WHS, wellbeing, and injury management practices, legislation, government initiatives, and industry trends.
  • Partner with Directors and Business Units to support effective hazard, incident, injury, and claims management in line with legislation and ReturnToWork SA standards.
  • Develop and implement training, guidance, and resources to help managers and staff meet WHS obligations and address emerging risk trends.
  • Lead complex incident investigations, including notifiable incidents (SafeWork SA), and oversee corrective actions.
  • Oversee emergency management within Business Units, including ECO Management, first aid services, and training.
  • Manage hazard, incident, and injury processes to ensure timely triage, investigation, injury coding, corrective actions, and close-out in strict timeframes.
  • Support and improve the WHSIM system by coordinating implementation, monitoring, internal audits, and corrective action follow-up.
  • Build and maintain strong internal and external relationships to advance WHSIM strategic goals and foster a strong Safety culture.
  • Lead and support consultation processes across TAFE SA, including WHS Committees, Health and Safety Representative Forums, and Leadership networks.

Key Selection Criteria:

  • Significant level of knowledge and experience in the interpretation and implementation of legislation, policies and procedures relating to workplace health, safety, and injury management.
  • Significant proven experience in workplace health and safety, with success in at least two WHS functional positions, providing client focussed consultancy, liaison and advisory services.
  • Proven experience in developing and executing projects and services that support WHS legislation, codes of practice, standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Well-developed interpersonal, facilitation, influencing, negotiation, networking and relationship management skills, both written and verbal, including building effective business partnering with agency senior leaders and stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to work under broad direction, demonstrate initiative, maintain confidentiality and professional integrity in all areas of written and verbal communication to support achievement of WHS objectives in a complex environment.
  • Significant experience in conducting complex WHS investigations and identifying corrective actions in a timely manner.
  • Proven experience in analysing and evaluating safety data and trends, relating to organisational WHS&IM strategy and objectives, and providing high level reports and recommendations.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing wellbeing programs and/or initiatives, in collaboration with key stakeholders, to support a diverse workforce and promote wellbeing in the workplace.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal Culture and Community.

Special Conditions
The successful applicant is required to demonstrate having a valid DHS Working With Children Check (WWCC) prior to being employed. Applicants who do not hold a WWCC will need to apply at Department of Human Services (DHS).

  • Some out of hours work will be required.
  • Some intrastate/interstate travel and overnight absences may be required.
  • Incumbent will be required to participate in the department's Performance Development Program
  • Eligibility to work in Australia.
