Canteen is all about supporting young people and their families affected by cancer. Founded by young cancer patients, we offer programs and resources that truly make a difference for 12-25 year-olds facing their own diagnosis, supporting a loved one, or grieving. Together, we believe our team can create real change

Canteen, Camp Quality and Redkite (Alliance Partners) are working together to provide Cancer Hub – a digital hub to help families impacted by cancer more easily access the practical and emotional support they need, when they need it.

Online Support is one service offered by Cancer Hub. The Team Leader- Online Counsellor position is responsible for the day-to-day operations and leadership of the Online Support team. The key focus of this role is to lead and support a national team of specialist social workers, psychologists and counsellors who provide therapeutic support young people 12-25, and parents/carers of children aged 0-25. The team utilises evidence-based counselling interventions in both booked and ad-hoc sessions; and is responsible for the service delivery (development and moderation) of online community, Canteen Connect.

About Our Role

  • Deliver Online Counselling: Provide high quality, evidence-based digital counselling support to a proportionate caseload of young people aged 12-25, and parents/carers/kin of children 0-25 years, who have a cancer experience.
  • Organisational Requirements: Support the delivery of Cancer Hub's Strategic Plan, and overall organisational goals and KPIs.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Contribute to key stakeholder relationships, working collaboratively with all services under Cancer Hub, Alliance Partners and other stakeholders to ensure young people and families receive access to the supports that best meet their needs.
  • Leadership: Lead, build and develop a team of autonomous counsellors to deliver high quality and evidence-based therapeutic and case management interventions, to ensure young people and families are supported through their cancer experience. In addition, provide leadership support to other teams within Cancer Hub and Canteen as required.
  • Program Development: Lead the growth and development of online community Canteen Connect; Actively participate in developing processes and procedures for the effective delivery of the Cancer Hub program in alignment with Canteen's Strategic Plan and key deliverables as per the funding agreement.

About You
Qualification/s:

  • Tertiary qualifications in relevant discipline (Psychology, Social Work, Counselling)
  • Current registration with AHPRA (Psychologist) or Eligibility for membership of the AASW (Social Worker), PACFA, ACA or similar peak accreditation body.
  • Current Working with Children Check and willingness to undergo National Criminal History Police Clearance.

Skills & Experience:

  • 3-5 years' experience in clinical practice within the mental health/youth health field, with specific experience working with young people and families including via digital means.
  • Demonstrated experience in management/ leadership within health or community sector. Experience managing a remote team preferred but not essential.
  • Demonstrated experience in the provision of grief, loss and bereavement counselling and support and sound knowledge of appropriate theoretical approaches.
  • Demonstrated experience in effective networking and collaboration with other service providers to build strong inter-agency networks.
  • High-level written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills including with MS office products, Salesforce (CMS) and in navigating other web-based systems.
  • Flexibility to travel interstate if, and when required.
  • A proactive and positive attitude with a willingness to learn and take on new challenges.
  • Warm, compassionate, and friendly approach to supporting our young people.
