Designated Position: Due to the nature of the Treaty process and emphasis on self-determination for First Peoples, this role has been designated for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people as a special measure under section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic). About the Treaty Authority
The Treaty Authority is an independent entity with a mandate to facilitate the formation of treaties between the State of Victoria and First Peoples in Victoria.
The Treaty Authority's work is grounded in Aboriginal culture, lore and law and led collectively by a panel of five Members committed to Aboriginal self-determination and empowerment. It engages with a broad cross-section of stakeholders, including the State of Victoria, the First Peoples' Assembly and Traditional Owners in Victoria.
The objects of the Treaty Authority's work are to:
• Facilitate the journey towards reconciliation, mutual respect and tolerance between First Peoples and other people of the State and to
• Maintain, promote and advance the self-determination and empowerment, culture and human rights of First Peoples.
About the Role
This designated Paralegal role provides an exciting opportunity for a First Peoples law student or recent law graduate to gain practical legal experience within an organisation grounded in Lore and Law.
Reporting to the Senior Lawyer within the Lore & Law team, the Paralegal supports the provision of strategic legal and cultural advice across all areas of the Treaty Authority's operations. You'll assist in administering the Treaty Negotiation Framework, managing compliance registers and supporting dispute resolution processes.
This is a casual position, offering flexibility to accommodate study commitments, as well as mentorship from experienced lawyers and Cultural leaders. We are looking for a suitable candidate able to commit approximately one day per week, but with the ability to flex up or down around study commitments. Please note: to support learning and collaboration, this is not a remote role and will be based in our Collingwood office.
Key Duties:
- Support the Senior Lawyer, General Counsel and Cultural Counsel in upholding Lore, Law and Cultural Authority across the organisation.
- Assist in providing risk-based legal advice and conducting legal research on a wide range of issues, including Treaty-related laws and corporate governance.
- Draft, review and interpret contracts, agreements and other legal documentation.
- Manage and maintain compliance registers, including contracts, gifts and benefits and conflicts of interest.
- Support the administration of the Treaty Negotiation Framework and the management of disputes under the Finding Common Ground Policy.
- Provide general administrative and project support to the Lore & Law team.
Selection Criteria:
- Current law student or recent graduate (LLB or JD).
- Strong legal research, analytical and writing skills.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment.
- Positive, solutions-focused attitude with strong attention to detail.
- Experience using Microsoft 365 and legal research platforms.
