About the role 

We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Engineer to join our Distributed Energy Resources Technical Integration team, supporting critical projects that enable the secure integration of distributed energy resources (DER) into the NEM power system.

This team is at the forefront of Australia's energy transformation, providing expert technical leadership across AEMO, the energy industry, and internationally. You'll contribute to developing and refining design principles for high-DER power systems, leading investigations to improve system design and operation, and helping address emerging technical challenges.

Working collaboratively across AEMO and with industry stakeholders, you'll play a key role in shaping the future operation of the power system and supporting the transition to a more distributed, reliable, and secure energy future.

What you will be doing

  • Lead technical investigations and system planning for integrating distributed energy resources (DER) into the NEM.
  • Provide expert technical advice on system security, reliability, and DER-related challenges.
  • Manage major cross-functional projects, including technical studies, planning, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Contribute to the development of system standards, specifications, and future design requirements.
  • Stay across international trends in DER integration to inform NEM development.
  • Support the Team Manager in delivering FES accountabilities, including acting as Manager when required.

Monetary and people accountabilities

Provide guidance and mentorship  to other Future Energy Systems team members, manage external consultants providing expert advice, and lead projects within approved delegations.

What you will bring to the role 

 

Education/Certificates


  1. Relevant tertiary qualifications in Engineering or related discipline, with a focus on power systems, renewable energy, or similar fields.
  2. Proficient use of all Microsoft Office product suite.

 

Experience & Knowledge

  • Proven ability to develop and lead multidisciplinary projects in distributed energy.
  • Skilled in preparing, reviewing, and finalising high-quality technical reports and documentation.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret and communicate complex data clearly.
  • Excellent communicator with the ability to listen, negotiate, influence, and build strong stakeholder relationships.
  • Proactive, self-driven, and outcomes-focused in achieving strategic objectives.
  • Experienced technical leader with a collaborative approach to delivering tactical plans aligned with strategic goals.

 

Desirable

Over 10 years' experience in the energy industry, ideally focused on DER technical integration, distribution networks, or product and service development. Experienced in defining functional requirements for power system operation and coordination in high-DER environments, including device standards, interoperability, and transmission–distribution coordination.
