AEMO at the Heart of Energy
AEMO is Australia's independent energy system and market operator and system planner. AEMO's purpose is to ensure safe, reliable and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians. Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050 and our vision is to enable this. We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around character, commitment, and connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant transition in the energy sector.
About the role
The Operations Department is central to fulfilling AEMO's obligations in the National Electricity Rules for the operation of the power system that supports the National Electricity Market (NEM). Within the Operations Department, the Systems Capability Division is responsible, through close collaboration with asset owners and users, for managing the networks AEMO operates. The Systems Performance team ensures that market ancillary services, such as frequency control and asset performance remain as expected; assists in rectifying compliance issues; and plays an important role in developing the procedures and specifications that govern system and asset performance.
In this position you will provide expertise for the monitoring of frequency performance and development of ancillary services within the NEM. Effective frequency monitoring and services development contribute to the effective introduction of new generation connections, and to the effective operation of the NEM generation fleet. This in turn supports AEMO in meeting its obligations under the National Electricity Rules.
What you will be doing
- Investigate the frequency performance in the NEM to provide recommendations and reporting.
- Investigate frequency events to provide analysis used to support possible actions or improvements to address frequency performance issues and non-compliances.
- Write, contribute to and review technical reports, ensuring all reports are of a high technical standard and suited to the intended audience.
- Liaise with AEMO internal teams and NEM participants to provide advice, facilitate information exchange, achieve query resolution and ensure the delivery of project outcomes.
- Contribute to the ongoing development of the Systems Performance team by providing support, coaching and mentoring to graduates.
What you will bring to the role
- Electrical Engineering degree with a power system and/or power electronics focus.
- Professional experience in the area of power systems, with knowledge of electrical engineering principles, specifically relating to electricity transmission, distribution and generation.
- Experience with frequency controls/services, and/or power plant/system operations will be highly regarded, along with knowledge of National Electricity Rules applicable to the frequency control.
- Strong written and verbal communications skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Desirable to have experience with data handling, analytics and programming and an interest in developing further skills in this area.
In return some of our benefits to you
- Flexible working: work from home, part time, job share, hybrid options, and additional leave options
- Professional development via projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance and more.
- Give back with up to 4 days of volunteering leave per year.
- Reward your hard work with annual performance bonuses (subject to eligibility).
- Embrace a healthier you with our wellness program, discounted health insurance, gym perks and our comprehensive Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

We welcome people of all backgrounds, including people with disabilities and neurodivergence and those who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
