Location Profile

Blackburn English Language School (ELS) has been operating for over 30 years and provides full time, intensive English courses for both primary and secondary newly-arrived migrants, refugees and International students.

The students usually enrol in our program prior to their enrolment in a mainstream school or further education. The school has three campuses: one in Burwood East (Whitehorse Campus), a second campus in Croydon North (Maroondah Campus) and a third in Wodonga (Wodonga Campus).

The school¿s beliefs and operations are based on a number of core values. These are:

  • Future Making
  • Embracing Diversity
  • Building Communities

Within the context of these values the school has a number of purposes. These are to provide:

  • a focused learning environment that supports all students to reach their potential in English language development and aims to prepare them for the academic, behavioural and social challenges of mainstream schools or alternative learning pathways.
  • a school environment that encourages students from a range of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to become confident and active participants in the wider Australian community.
  • a supportive and stimulating work environment for all staff that encourages commitment, innovation and excellence.
  • learning opportunities for newly arrived families that broaden their knowledge of the Victorian schooling system and prepare them for involvement in the school community.
  • professional learning opportunities for mainstream school staff to support newly arrived and EAL students in mainstream schools across the NEVR.
Selection Criteria
  • Develop and maintain library spaces at the school as active, welcoming, stimulating, and efficient learning spaces for students and staff
  • Ensure that the administration of the library is efficient, and that systems, resources and equipment are well maintained
  • Manage budget to develop a diverse, relevant and culturally inclusive collection that appeals to all students

Role

[Attendance requirement for this position]

Range 3 is distinguished by the introduction of management responsibility and accountability for the delivery of professional support services. The role will usually impact beyond the work area or professional field. It seeks to gain cooperation of other staff members or members of the school community to achieve specific objectives, such as in school administration, operations or educational programs.

Direction on targets and goals is provided but the position will have some degree of latitude in determining how they are achieved. This latitude will generally be limited by standard procedures and school policy. Deviation from standard procedures and school policy will require guidance and direction from senior management.

The provision of business management responsibilities becomes a feature at range 3. Management of staff to achieve the expected outcomes is a key responsibility. Staff management issues will be resolved with minimal reference to senior management, although guidance will be required in more complex cases. Senior management will be provided with timely reports and advice, although this will generally be confined to matters relating to the immediate work area, service provision or educational program and is unlikely to impact substantially on whole of school operations.

This is the minimum range for positions that carry a mandatory qualification requirement of not less than four years. Professional student support positions become a feature at range 3 (e.g. therapists, psychologists) where standard professional services are delivered. Professional support and guidance will be close at hand and deviation from standard procedures and school policy will require guidance and direction from senior management.

An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students, but must not include duties of teaching as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor. Supervision of students cannot be required except where it is an integral part of the employee¿s position or involves supervision of students individually or in small groups, in controlled circumstances, where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.

Responsibilities
  • Holds relevant qualifications in librarianship/Information Management
  • Provide effective library and information services to meet the information needs of students and staff at all campuses of Blackburn English Language School
  • Develop policies, procedures and criteria for selecting resources which meet curriculum, informational and student learning needs
  • Develop a diverse, relevant and culturally inclusive collection that appeals to all students
  • Provide access to information resources through efficient and well-guided systems for organising, retrieving and circulating resources
  • Provide training and assistance to students and staff in the effective use of these systems
  • Plan and work collaboratively with curriculum leaders to ensure information resources and technologies support student learning and meet the school¿s strategic goals
  • Develop budget estimates to ensure that teaching and learning requirements are met
  • Provide assistance to students in the use of information resources and guide them to suitable reading materials
  • Promote the effective use of resources and information sources, systems and services within the school community
  • Maintain libraries at the school as an active, stimulating, and efficient learning space for students and staff
  • Ensure that the day-to-day administration of the library efficient, and that systems, resources and equipment are well maintained
  • Coordinate the roles and daily tasks of the Library Technician
  • Support other educational services of the school community as necessary
