The opportunity
The Coordinator Parks, Maintenance and Horticulture reports to the Manager Parks & Open Space and is responsible for ensuring the operations and sites, while overseeing the effective management and maintenance of the City's open spaces. This leadership role requires both operational expertise and specialist horticulture knowledge, driving high-quality outcomes for the community.
The position provides strategic and hands-on oversight across all facets of open space management, including the maintenance of parks, reserves and sports fields, the management of irrigation and horticulture services, and the ongoing care and enhancement of the Williamstown Botanic Gardens. Through the implementation of best practice principles and continuous improvement strategies, the Coordinator ensures that the Unit operates efficiently, sustainably and in alignment with Council's strategic objectives.
What you'll be doing
- Ensure the effective management of the Unit incorporating best practice principles and continuous improvement strategies
- Management and maintenance of open spaces and parks
- Maintenance of sports fields and associated irrigation assets
- Oversee horticulture services both indoor and outdoor
- Management and maintenance of the Williamstown Botanic Gardens
What you'll need to succeed
- Qualification in Horticulture, Sports Turf Management, Landscape Architecture or related discipline.
- Significant knowledge of horticultural and botanic gardens management, turf and sportsground management, irrigation and water management in open space settings
- Sound understanding of budgeting and financial practices, with demonstrated ability to prepare, implement and manage budgets.
- Demonstrated skills in contractor management to ensure the delivery of high-quality services.
- Highly developed time management skills, with the capacity to work autonomously, make informed decisions, manage competing priorities, and set objectives for self and others to achieve outcomes efficiently with available resources.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build strong working relationships, influence and gain cooperation, and liaise effectively with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated experience in staff management with the ability to lead, motivate and develop employees.
- Demonstrated ability to implement and oversee OHS management systems and protocols to effectively manage operational risks.
- Experience in open space strategic policy development and planning for service delivery.
