About us

Legal Aid NSW helps people with their legal problems. We can help people with most areas criminal law, family law and every day civil law legal issues. We give legal advice, help at court and do family dispute resolution. We can do this over the telephone or at one of our 28 offices.

About the role

Your Voice is a specialist team within Legal Aid NSW supporting children and young people in out-of-home care (OOHC). As a Senior Caseworker, you will collaborate with lawyers to provide short to medium-term casework to vulnerable young people, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people. Using a socio-legal approach, you'll help address legal and psychosocial needs, advocating for their rights and access to services and ensuring their essential needs such as; education, health, culture, and family connection are met.

About you

You're a passionate and experienced professional with a strong background in supporting children and young people, particularly those with adverse childhood experiences. You bring a trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming approach and are skilled in engaging with young people from diverse backgrounds. You bring a strong social science background and a commitment to provide clinical expertise, evidence-based practice and a child rights approach to your work.

You're collaborative by nature and thrive in interdisciplinary teams. You're ready to contribute to an innovative legal advocacy model, working alongside lawyers and service providers to support young people's legal and psychosocial wellbeing. You think creatively, communicate effectively, and understand how to identify and mobilise stakeholders in responding to unmet needs.

You will use your advanced communication skills to engage diverse audiences and contribute to training and systemic advocacy to strengthen sector capability. You'll support the development of integrated legal-psychosocial practice, deliver internal and external training, and maintain accurate records for effective case management and reporting.

The essential requirements for this role

You must:

  • Bachelor Social Work (4 years study) or Masters of Social Work or Bachelor Degree in Psychology or a related discipline with eligibility for professional registration

  • Minimum 5 years relevant experience

  • Be willing to undertake a Criminal Record Check

  • Hold a current NSW Working with Children Check

  • hold Australian or NZ citizenship, Australian Permanent Residency (for ongoing vacancies) or a valid visa to work in Australia (for temporary vacancies)

  • Be willing to travel when required to support young people across various metro, remote and regional locations

  • Experience working with children and young people

The Family Law Division have several roles where it is a statutory obligation for staff to hold a valid Working with Children Check. You will be required to provide your Working with Children Check details prior to commencement in any role requiring the check.
