Primary objective
This position takes a lead role in the work of Clinical Rehabilitation to create safer communities and reduce re-offending through cultural
advice and input into the development, delivery and evaluation of treatment programs and assessment methods for Aboriginal offenders
in the Northern Territory; as well as the supervision, mentoring and training of Aboriginal staff engaged in rehabilitating offenders.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide advice, support and training on culturally appropriate best-practice methods to a multidisciplinary team delivering criminogenic
assessment and programs for offenders.
- Provide supervision, mentoring and support to Aboriginal staff engaged in rehabilitating offenders through the delivery of treatment
programs, providing cultural advice to clinical staff and cultural brokerage for Aboriginal offenders.
3. Provide cultural advice and input into the development, delivery and evaluation of treatment programs and assessment methods for
Aboriginal offenders in the Northern Territory.
4. Develop and implement cultural learning, coaching and mentoring strategies that assist staff in providing high level services to
Aboriginal offenders.
- Contribute to the development of cultural practice standards and policy initiatives relating to the delivery of offender rehabilitation
within the Department of Corrections.
6. Provide support and advice regarding networking with Aboriginal stakeholders, non-government organisations and the local
community.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. High level understanding of issues, trends and practices related to Aboriginal people, particularly those in the Northern Territory,
coupled with the ability to analyse their impact on the community, and experience in providing cultural advice and/or brokerage.
2. Familiarity with best practices in assessing and rehabilitating Aboriginal offenders and an ability to drive innovation.
3. Demonstrated ability to provide effective leadership and advice on issues involving services to Aboriginal offenders and the ability to
provide related training, mentoring and supervision to all levels of staff.
4. Proven capacity to operate efficiently, both autonomously and as an integral part of a multi-disciplinary team, within a complex
therapeutic environment.
5. Demonstrated ability in effectively communicating with diverse stakeholders at all levels, both verbally and in writing, including the
ability to communicate across cultures and professional backgrounds.
- Solid information technology skills with a readiness to acquire new IT competencies, including the utilisation of internal information
databases and Microsoft Office software
7. Willingness to work flexible hours and undertake some travel (light aircraft) to remote communities and Alice Springs.
Desirable
1. Demonstrated sound understanding of, or experience working within a clinical team delivering offender rehabilitation services (or
similar).
2. Relevant qualifications (e.g. Degree in Psychology/Criminology, Social Work, Community Services, Community Development).
