About the Opportunity
As part of the City Operations Program, the Lead, Waste and Resource Recovery Services plays an important role in keeping Adelaide clean, sustainable, and future-focused. This role provides high-level professional, technical, and procedural advice on waste management, while ensuring Council's waste and recycling services are delivered efficiently, safely, and in line with community and environmental expectations.
It's a dynamic position that combines operational coordination, project management, and people leadership. You'll oversee the day-to-day operations of the Waste Services Team by coordinating tasks, allocating resources, managing contracts and budgets, and maintaining strong relationships with contractors, internal teams, and community stakeholders.
You will also contribute to strategic planning and continuous improvement, supporting the Team Leader, Waste and Cleansing in identifying opportunities to enhance performance, service delivery, and sustainability outcomes. You'll be involved in introducing new technologies, reviewing policies and procedures, and helping shape Council's approach to waste reduction and circular economy initiatives.
As a leader, you'll foster a positive, accountable, and customer-focused culture where people feel supported to do their best work. You'll provide clear direction, coach and develop team members, and ensure services are delivered to a consistently high standard, helping the City of Adelaide achieve its resource recovery and environmental goals.
This is a hands-on leadership opportunity where your technical expertise, people skills, and commitment to sustainability will make a real difference to the way Adelaide manages its waste and protects its environment for the future.

About You
To be successful in this role you will have:
- A tertiary qualification in project or contract and/or leadership management or related field and/or commensurate demonstrated experience in most aspects of the selection criteria in lieu of formal qualifications Diploma and above.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, manage and develop people in order to achieve quality outcomes.
- Proven experience and success in managing contracts in waste together with the ability to negotiate to achieve positive outcomes.
- Comprehensive knowledge of waste and recycling principles and practices.
- Comprehensive knowledge of local, national and international waste and recycling issues and initiatives.
- Handling multiple, complex situations and the ability to recommend, implement and monitor solutions or corrective actions to achieve positive outcomes.
