Deputy Director, Law Claims

This position is located within the Law Claims unit of the Law Society of South Australia.
The Claims division of the unit has responsibility for:
- the administration of claims for the Legal Practitioners Professional Indemnity Insurance Scheme (Scheme);
- the review, defence and the settlement of claims against legal practitioners; and
- liaison with brokers and Underwriters involved with the Legal Practitioners Professional Indemnity Insurance Scheme.
The Risk Management division of the unit is responsible for developing and delivering risk management activities aimed at decreasing the incidence of claims.
Responsible to the Director, Law Claims, this position will manage a portfolio of claim files and otherwise support the Director in all aspects of managing and delivering the Law Claims Unit functions.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and advise on claims for the Legal Practitioners Professional Indemnity Insurance Scheme, including negotiation, mediation, and litigation support.
- Provide expert advice to practitioners and stakeholders on claims and preventive measures.
- Assist the Director in overseeing the operational management of the Law Claims Unit, including staffing, resource allocation, and compliance with relevant legislation and policies.
- Participate in the development and delivery of risk management programs to reduce the incidence of claims.
- Prepare and deliver reports and papers at Board meetings.
- Prepare reports and articles for internal and external publications, and represent the Society at seminars, conferences, and workshops.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- At least 7 years' experience in legal practice.
- A strong interest and understanding of insurance and professional indemnity matters.
- Demonstrated experience managing a team.
- Experience in insurance claim management or a related field.
- Administrative experience, particularly in law practice operations.
- Excellent research and report writing skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to relate to legal professionals and stakeholders.
- Eligibility to hold an unrestricted practising certificate.
- High level of computer literacy.
