Primary objective
Assist the Registered Nurse/Midwife to provide high quality, culturally sensitive nursing/midwifery care to patients to achieve best
possible health outcomes within an identified scope of practice.
Context statement
As a valued member of the multi-disciplinary team, the Patient Care Assistant (PCA) will assist the Registered Nurse/Midwife (RN/RM), to
deliver nursing/midwifery care in acute and primary healthcare settings across the NT. Successful applicants will be supported to complete
all online essential training requirements and attend an induction course on commencement.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Under the direct supervision of an RN, assist in the delivery of high-quality patient centred care including assistance with Activities for
Daily Living (ADLs) such as feeding, hydration, shower and mobility.
2. Ensures that patients that are not mobilising are repositioned regularly with an RN to maintain patients' skin integrity.
3. In collaboration with an RN, promotes meaningful engagement especially for patients with Dementia and other confusional states
through diversional therapy activities.
4. Promotes ongoing re-orientation of patients with impaired cognitive function.
5. Participate in de-escalation strategies for when incidents of patient aggression occur, and document on behavioural chart the triggers
as well escalates to RN as required.
6. Obtains support and advice regarding performance expectations, management of patients and application of policies and procedure
from the RN/RM as required.
7. Participates in ensuring environmental /unit's safety activities under the direct supervision of an RN.
8. Foster a positive workplace culture through role modelling appropriate behaviour.
9. Follows defined service quality standards, Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) policies and procedures relating to the work being
undertaken to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated experience in the delivery of patient care in an acute or primary healthcare setting.
- Confident written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills to contribute positively to the patient experience and the
multidisciplinary team.
3. Demonstrated understanding, awareness, and ability (under the supervision of an RN/RM) to prioritize and provide safe patient care.
4. Demonstrated understanding of the impact of social and cultural challenges experienced by vulnerable groups/communities and the
role of the patient care assistant in supporting them.
5. Preparedness and capacity to work shift work rostered to meet the requirements of the organisation and be redeployed to other
clinical areas to meet organisational needs.
6. Knowledge and application of Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) principles in a health care setting or similar.
Desirable
1. NT Drivers Licence
- Certificate III in Health Services Assistant or equivalent.
