Primary objective

Develop and lead research projects to support the sustainable development of the Northern Territory aquaculture industry.

Context statement

The Darwin Aquaculture Centre is the NT Governments aquaculture research, development and extension facility. Existing

research priorities are Blacklip Rock Oysters, Golden Snapper and Black Jewfish with a strong focus on Aboriginal industry

participation and supporting the growth and resilience of the NT aquaculture industry. This position will provide expert

scientific advice and assist with the development and leadership of research projects within NT Fisheries.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Provide leadership, supervision, mentoring and scientific advice.

  1. Develop, plan and manage the physical, financial and human resources applicable to research projects.
  2. Source and prepare external funding applications and publish research findings.
  3. Represent Fisheries on advisory committees and technical working groups as required.
  4. Develop and maintain partnerships and collaboration with stakeholders including aquaculture producers, Aboriginal

communities and organisations, industry representatives, external funding agencies, and colleagues in universities and

research institutions.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Post graduate degree in Aquaculture or a related field.

2. Demonstrated knowledge of tropical aquaculture with substantial practical experience in producing aquaculture species

and conducting field-based research.

3. Excellent written and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to interact effectively with people of diverse

cultures and to form positive and effective working partnerships with Aboriginal people and a wide range of

stakeholders.

  1. Proven skills and experience in conceiving, designing, securing funding and managing research projects.
  2. Demonstrated competence in the application of statistical analysis, and experimental design techniques including

development and management of databases for storage and handling or research information.

Desirable

1. First Aid certificate or the ability to obtain one.
