Sydney, New South Wales, Australia Hays Full time

Your new company

Hays Recruitment is proud to be exclusively partnering with NSW Ports to recruit an Assistant Operations Manager. NSW Ports oversees several of the state's most significant trade gateways, including Port Botany, Port Kembla, and the Enfield Intermodal Logistics Centre. With a workforce of around 65 people across three sites, the organisation operates as a close, collaborative team committed to maintaining safe and efficient port environments that support NSW's broader supply chain. NSW Ports takes a long‑term, sustainable approach to operations and plays a vital role in the movement of goods across the state.

Your new role

In this position, you will support the Port Operations Manager in the day‑to‑day management of berth operations and Bulk Liquids Terminals at Port Botany and Port Kembla. Your responsibilities will include coordinating vessel schedules, assisting with pre‑arrival planning, maintaining operational procedures and ensuring that safety and compliance standards are consistently upheld. This is a hands-on, site-based role located in Port Botany on a Monday to Friday basis with some after-hours availability required based on operational needs. You will work closely with contractors, berth users and internal teams to maintain smooth vessel movements and reliable operational performance across the network.

What you need to succeed

To be successful, you will bring experience in port operations, stevedoring or bulk liquid environments, along with the confidence to operate in a fast‑paced, safety‑critical setting. Strong communication skills, sound judgement and the ability to prioritise competing demands are essential. You will also need a practical understanding of risk and emergency procedures, a current NSW driver's licence and the ability to obtain a Maritime Identification Security Credential. A proactive approach and the ability to build strong working relationships will be key to thriving in this role.

What you'll get in return

This is an opportunity to join a stable organisation with a clear long‑term vision and contribute to critical state infrastructure. You'll be supported by experienced leaders who understand the operational realities of the role and who foster a culture built on collaboration, integrity and long‑term thinking. NSW Ports offers the rare combination of a small, close‑knit team with the scale and impact of a major infrastructure operator. You will have the opportunity to work across diverse port environments, gain exposure to complex operational challenges, and build strong relationships with stakeholders across the maritime sector.
