The Criminal Law Branch in the Legislation, Policy and Program Division in the Justice and Community Safety Directorate has an immediate vacancy at the SOG B Director level and anticipates further opportunities will arise across the Division over the next 12 months.

If you have been thinking about dipping your toe into the challenging but rewarding world of legal policy, now is the time. You will work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, working on a range of challenging and interesting legal policy issues, supported by a friendly and experienced leadership team. The work is relevant to the justice and safety needs of the ACT community and you will see how your work positively impacts the community.

The immediate vacancy is in the Criminal Courts Team within the Criminal Law Branch, and suitable candidates will be considered for identical vacancies that arise across the Division over the next 12 months.

The successful applicant will provide leadership, autonomously manage an extensive work program and prepare high quality reports, briefs, submissions and correspondence for Ministers. The successful applicant will develop and promote positive relationships with key stakeholders and support JACS Executive at high level meetings.

To be successful, the applicant will require excellent legal research and analytical skills, a detailed understanding of government processes, and strong stakeholder engagement, organisational, and collaboration skills.

Criminal Law Branch

The Criminal Law Branch develops and implements policy, law reform and legislation relating to the criminal justice system, including on matters relating to domestic and family violence, sexual assault, bail, sentencing, corrections, policing and firearms.

The current vacancy in the Branch's Criminal Courts Team focuses on policy and legislative reform related to the criminal and coronial courts, including the drug and alcohol court, and is currently working on options for bail and sentencing reform. The Team also works on mental health issues that intersect with the criminal justice system, such as fitness to plead. The Team works closely with other parts of the Branch and Division on a range of other government priorities related to the ACT's justice and law systems and processes.

Please note, this workplace is designed for activity-based working (ABW). Under ABW arrangements, officers will not have a designated desk.
