About Northern Health:
Northern Health is the major provider of acute, maternity, sub-acute, mental health, specialist, community and home-based services in Melbourne's rapidly growing outer north.
Services are provided through our five main campuses:
Northern Hospital Epping, Broadmeadows Hospital, Bundoora Centre, Craigieburn Community Hospital, and Kilmore District Hospital. In addition, Mental Health Services are provided at Epping, Broadmeadows, Jacana, Preston, Mill Park, Craigieburn and Coburg.
The Role:
An exciting opportunity exists for a highly motivated and enthusiatic Nurse to be part of a new Community Mental Health team at Craigieburn Community Hospital.
As part of this team, you will:
- Provide assessment, deliver treatment and targeted interventions and support to service users and to their family/carers
- Work within the medication clinic to provide accurate, timely and direct nursing care while liaising with other clinical staff
- Work under the direction of the senior nurse of the team and complete all required nursing assessments in accordance with the service user's care plan and Northern Health policy including the administration of injectable medications, risk assessments and assessment of vital signs
- Complete additional duties related to the medication clinic including collaboration of medication fridge, completion of necessary audits, ordering of medication and medical supplies, and ensuring the clinic is clean and compliant with all relevant Northern Health policies, procedures and standards
- Undertake physical health monitoring as requested by clinical staff
- Accompany allied health staff on community home visits where required for the purpose of administering injectable medications
- Particpate in Duty Worker function as required by the multidisciplinary team and manage a small case load of consumers, as required
- Undertake any relevant education or training for consolidation of skills and ongoing professional development
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Bachelor Degree in Nursing or equivalent plus an approved postgraduate qualification in Mental Health Nursing
- Working knowledge of psychotropic medications and physical health monitoring
- Capacity to utilize de-escalation skills as required and respond safely to varying situations
- Capacity to build and maintain therapeutic rapport with a diverse range of people
- Ability to communicate and problem solve with service users, their families/carers and others in a multidisciplinary network
- Sound clinical skills with an understanding of the recovery framework
- Demonstrated capacity for initiative and an ability to work appropriately with limited direction
- Relevant clinic qualification, knowledge and demonstrated skills in the principles and practice of working with people with severe psychiatric disorder
