Outer Space is a leading not-for-profit contemporary arts organisation based in Magandjin (Brisbane), operating across exhibition, studio, and public programs that support artists to develop, present, and connect their work with audiences.
Established in 2016, Outer Space is a not-for-profit, artist-focused organisation that provides accessible opportunities for creative development, critical dialogue, and experimentation across a diverse range of practices. Outer Space is currently based at the Judith Wright Arts Centre, with additional studio and project spaces across Magandjin (Brisbane).

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Director of Outer Space is an energetic, inclusive, and strategic leader responsible for shaping and delivering the organisation's artistic vision and operational sustainability. Reporting to the Board, the Director serves as both the artistic and executive head of the organisation, leading strategic planning, partnerships, and public engagement while ensuring strong financial management and governance.
The Director works closely with the team to deliver ambitious and critically engaged programs that support artists, audiences, and communities. This is a key leadership opportunity to contribute to the future direction of a growing organisation and strengthen Outer Space's impact locally, nationally, and internationally.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Artistic Leadership and Programming
- Develop and deliver annual artistic programming that reflects Outer Space's mission and supports diverse contemporary practices.
- Oversee all program strands, including exhibitions, public programs, studios, and professional development initiatives.
- Foster relationships with artists, curators, and partners to produce high-quality, inclusive, and innovative projects.
2. Strategic Leadership and Organisational Development
- Implement the current Strategic Plan and lead future planning processes in consultation with the Board and stakeholders.
- Drive organisational growth, including audience development, partnerships, and long-term sustainability.
- Represent Outer Space in local and national forums, ensuring alignment with sector developments and opportunities.
3. Financial and Resource Management
- Prepare and manage annual budgets and financial reporting in line with strategic goals and funding agreements.
- Secure diverse income streams through government funding, partnerships, philanthropy, and earned income.
- Maintain strong financial and risk management practices, ensuring transparency and accountability.
4. Stakeholder and Community Engagement
- Build and maintain relationships with artists, funding bodies, partners, and the broader community.
- Act as an advocate for Outer Space and the visual arts sector in Queensland and beyond.
- Strengthen Outer Space's profile through public engagement, media, and communications.
5. Governance and Compliance
- Work with the Board to ensure good governance, compliance, and strategic oversight.
- Provide timely reports on program delivery, finances, and organisational performance.
- Ensure adherence to all legislative, contractual, and workplace health and safety obligations.
6. Team Leadership and Development
- Foster an inclusive, collaborative, and supportive organisational culture.
- Manage recruitment, supervision, and development of staff, contractors, and volunteers.
- Champion equity, access, and wellbeing across all aspects of the organisation's operations.
ABOUT YOU
Essential
- Artistic Leadership and Vision: Demonstrated experience curating or delivering innovative, inclusive, and artist-centred programs in the visual arts.
- Strategic and Organisational Leadership: Proven ability to develop and deliver strategic plans, manage teams, and achieve measurable outcomes.
- Financial and Resource Management: Strong financial literacy and experience in managing budgets, funding, and income generation for not-for-profits.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with artists, government, community, and partners.
- Team Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead, inspire, and support a small team to deliver high-quality outcomes.
- Qualifications: Relevant tertiary qualifications (Visual Arts, Art History, Curatorial Studies, Cultural Management, or related field) or equivalent industry experience.
Desirable
- Connection to Queensland's Arts and Cultural Landscape: Understanding of the local and national arts ecology, with established networks and partnerships.
- Experience in Fundraising and Development: Demonstrated ability to secure sponsorship, philanthropy, or alternative income sources.
- Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion: Proven capacity to embed equity, access, and representation within programs and workplace culture.
