As a growing business with a strong reputation in the residential construction sector, we're seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Accountant to strengthen our finance team and support the delivery of our expanding portfolio of projects.
Position Summary
The Accountant plays a key role in supporting the company's financial management and reporting functions.
Reporting to the Finance Manager, this position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, managing daily accounting activities, supporting project cost control, and assisting in the preparation of monthly management reports and compliance documentation.
This is a hands-on role that requires strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively across both finance and project teams.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Assist the Finance Manager in managing all aspects of the company's accounting function.
- Prepare and maintain accurate financial records, journals, and reconciliations.
- Support the preparation of monthly management accounts, including profit and loss, balance sheet, and cash flow reports.
- Assist in the preparation of annual budgets, forecasts, and variance analysis.
- Ensure financial reporting is accurate, timely, and compliant with accounting standards.
Accounts Payable & Receivable
- Manage accounts payable and receivable processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Reconcile supplier statements and resolve discrepancies.
- Process progress claims, subcontractor payments, and variations in accordance with project schedules.
- Maintain records of retentions and payment schedules in line with contractual obligations.
Compliance & Audit
- Assist with preparation and lodgement of BAS, payroll tax, superannuation, and other statutory reporting.
- Support external auditors during annual audit processes.
- Maintain compliance with internal control frameworks and financial policies.
- Ensure company accounting practices adhere to ICIRT and Class 2 compliance requirements.
Process Improvement & Systems Support
- Contribute to continuous improvement of financial systems, reporting templates, and workflows.
- Support the implementation and maintenance of accounting and project management software.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to streamline financial processes and enhance reporting accuracy.
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
Essential:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Minimum 3 years' experience in accounting, ideally within construction or project-based industries.
- Strong understanding of financial reporting, reconciliation, and cost control processes.
- Proficiency with Xero, MYOB, or similar accounting software.
- Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Desirable:
- Experience with construction project accounting systems and subcontractor payment processes.
- Progress toward CPA or CA qualification.
- Working knowledge of ICIRT frameworks, Class 2 compliance, or NSW construction regulation.
- Advanced Excel skills and familiarity with financial modelling or forecasting.
