Hyundai Rotem Company (HRC) was founded in 1977 and since that time, has been leading the industry globally by delivering critical national infrastructure in over 50 countries.  A leader in the Korean rail industry, HRC has succeded in developing high-speed trains and is now establishing their presence in the Australian market.

The New Intercity Fleet (NIF) Project - a joint venture between HRC, UGL and MEA, this project is delivering a fleet of new intercity trains for operation in the NSW electrified rail network.  The fleet comprises of 55 Long Units and 70 Short Units for the Newcastle, Blue Mountains, South Coast and Central Coast Lines.

Combined local and international design teams and suppliers will work together to ensure the delivery of manufacturing requirements and associated documentation to ensure that train sets locally manufactured in Australia meet the design, compliance, manufactuability, reliability, maintainability and safety specifications for the trains operational life for a minimum of at least 35 years.

The Opportunity:

As part of the introduction of the New Intercity Fleet (NIF) into NSW, we are seeking a Train Captain to join our team and play a critical role in the safe and effective testing and commissioning of new trains. This is an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of delivering modern, world class trains to NSW, ensuring the highest standards of safety, compliance, and operational excellence.

Responsibilities:

As Train Captain, you will be responsible for leading and managing dynamic test and commissioning activities across the rail network. You will oversee onboard personnel during testing, report on technical progress, and ensure all safety, compliance, and quality requirements are met prior to handover.

Your leadership, attention to detail, and technical expertise will directly contribute to the successful introduction of Hyundai Rotem's new fleet.

  • Ensure all dynamic test and commissioning activities are conducted safely.
  • Manage the safety of all onboard personnel during testing operations.
  • Effectively coordinate test runs, inspections, and reporting requirements.
  • Proactively identify and address safety or technical issues, escalating to senior management as required.
  • Complete pre-release checks and ensure documentation is finalised before handover to train crew.
  • Accurately report on testing progress and distribute Train Captain Reports in a timely manner.
  • Ensure compliance with all HRC procedures, emergency plans, and rail safety legislation.

Skills / Qualifications / Experience:

  • A relevant qualification in engineering or similar discipline.
  • Minimum 2 years' experience in rolling stock or rail operations.
  • Strong understanding of safety management practices and rail safety legislation.
  • Proven ability to organise, prioritise, and manage multiple tasks under pressure.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to engage stakeholders at all levels.
  • Computer proficiency (MS Word, Excel, email).
