About the Role
This is a part time ongoing role at 64 hours per fortnight within the Banksia ward.
You will work closely with the RCH Nursing Education team, role modelling and promoting excellence in mental health nursing practice, by fostering an environment of positive enquiry and culture of continuous learning. The CNE will lead a transition program supporting up to 3 Registered Nurses transitioning from General Nursing to Mental Health Nursing. In addition, the CNE role will provide ongoing support to the formation and sustainability of Banksia's Eating Disorder Program. The primary purpose of this role is to provide educational leadership and guidance to enable the development of knowledge and skills in entry level, and developing and experienced mental health nursing staff. You will have advanced clinical nursing knowledge and skills to influence quality care and initiate evidence-based practice in the in-patient mental health setting. Work in partnership with the Nurse Unit Manager (NUM), and other nursing leaders to ensure continuing professional development activities to support and maintain a collaborative mental health inpatient team focused on achieving excellence in clinical outcomes.
What you'll achieve:
- Work alongside new and existing staff to support delivery of excellence in mental health nursing care and develop their skills, knowledge, abilities and attributes
- Develop and engage high quality, reflective group and individual clinical supervision frameworks for undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate, transition nurses and all mental health nursing staff in collaboration with the PNC
- Demonstrate a commitment to own clinical progression, by creating a professional development plan (in collaboration with the Senior Psychiatric Nurse (SPN)) which reflects contemporary child and adolescent mental health nursing
- Evaluate and report on the effectiveness of nursing workforce education and training programs
Classification for this position will range from Grade 4 Year 1 (NP75) to Grade 4 Year 3 (NP77) (FTE base salary $112,465.6 to $121,113.2 per annum, plus superannuation).
Your skills and experience:
- Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) administered though the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (APHRA)
- Evidence of extensive experience in the area of acute adolescent mental health
• Demonstrate expert knowledge and application of the contemporary theories and techniques of practice that underpin mental health care and management of challenging behaviours - Post graduate diploma in Mental Health Nursing or have completed a specialist undergraduate Mental Health Nursing program
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing personal and professional development, as evidenced in a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) record/Professional Practice Portfolio
- Demonstrated understanding of the Mental Health Intensive Care Framework (2019), Victorian Mental Health Act and other relevant legislation, policies and strategic directions of public Mental Health Services
- Demonstrated understanding of adult learning principles
- Preceptorship experience and knowledge
- Relevant computer skills and experience working with learning management systems

About Banksia Ward - Mental Health
Banksia - Mental Health Ward is a 16-bed inpatient unit where young people aged 13 to 18 years are assessed and treated for a range of mental and psychological disorders. The Ward provides the least restrictive environment possible while remaining compatible with the needs and safety of young people and staff. It also aims to promote community management wherever possible.
Banksia Ward uses a multi-disciplinary approach to assess and treat young people admitted to the Ward. The team is comprised of consultant psychiatrists, registered nurses with mental health qualifications, a psychologist, social worker, psychiatry registrar and teachers with special education qualifications.
