The Opportunity
As an Experienced or Senior Materials Engineer with HRL, you will be at the forefront of our ground-breaking projects, partnering with businesses to drive innovation, sustainability, performance, and efficiency. This role will suit someone who thrives in a consulting environment, enjoys both hands-on inspection work and desktop technical studies, and is motivated to support clients through operational and strategic challenges.
We are seeking applications for our head office in Mulgrave, VIC.
Key Responsibilities:
As an Experienced or Senior Materials Engineer, you have technical knowledge/expertise and will work within a team that delivers a suite of services in the field or laboratory, including, but not limited to:
- Lead and support materials engineering assessments across power stations, oil and gas facilities, and mineral processing plants.
- Provide expert input on damage mechanism, welding engineering matters, repair strategies, and fitness-for-service considerations.
- Undertake desktop research and technical studies, developing high-quality reports and recommendations for clients.
- Travel to client sites as required to perform inspections, assessments, and project support.
- Contribute to projects focused on flexible operations and energy transition, supporting clients in adapting to the evolving energy landscape.
- Engage with clients in a consulting capacity, delivering practical, value-driven solutions that align with their operational and strategic goals.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the continuous development of the team's technical capability.
About you
You must have:
- A Bachelors or Master's degree in Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, Metallurgical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, and recognised by Engineers Australia.
- Minimum 5 years proven work experience in the industry.
- Strong operational knowledge of power industry and/or oil and gas processing facilities, and/or mineral processing plants.
- Strong report-writing skills.
- Ability to balance site-based inspections with desktop research and analysis.
- Willingness and flexibility to travel for project delivery.
- Strong interest in supporting clients through flexible operations and energy transition initiatives.
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder engagement skills.
You will also have:
- An energetic and flexible approach.
- An ability to work as part of a team, sharing knowledge and information
- Practical problem-solving skill
- A sound knowledge of the Microsoft Suite of packages
- A willingness and ability to travel domestically and overseas, as required
- A valid Australian Driver's Licence
- Current legal working rights in Australia
The following will be viewed favourably:
- Previous experience in a consulting environment with strong client facing roles
- Experience with conducting fatigue and creep life assessments, risk-based inspection
- Condition assessment and remaining life calculation experience
- Understanding of welding processes, inspection methods, and repair strategies
