About the role

The National Parks and Wildlife Service has an exciting opportunity for an Environmental Management Officer to play a key role in protecting and managing the unique natural and cultural values of Kosciuszko National Park. This role is focused on ensuring environmental legislation and planning responsibilities are applied effectively, particularly in relation to ski resort areas and associated activities within the park.

As an Environmental Management Officer, you will provide specialist advice and administration under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979, the State Environmental Planning Policy (Precincts – Regional) 2021, and the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974. You will coordinate NPWS responses to development applications, working closely with environmental, public health, and leasing experts to assess proposals and ensure outcomes that balance environmental protection with sustainable use. This role is integral to guiding planning decisions, supporting compliance, and maintaining the long-term health and resilience of one of NSW's most significant protected areas.

About You

You are someone who brings experience in the planning or development space and can confidently navigate complex environmental legislation to support decision-making in Kosciuszko National Park's resort areas. You are confident to coordinate responses to development applications under Part IV of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act and can providing advice across leasing, environmental health, municipal services, flora and fauna, cultural heritage and park management. You have the skills to prepare clear referral advice, briefings and reports, support reviews of Environmental Factors and Activity Applications under Part V, and provide trusted guidance to government agencies, lessees, resort operators and other stakeholders. You thrive on interpreting planning frameworks, contributing to technical reports and managing consultancies, all whilst balancing development needs with the protection of environmental and cultural values.

Essential requirements

  • Relevant tertiary/graduate qualifications in fields associated with urban and regional planning, natural resources planning, environmental planning or land management.
  • Detailed knowledge, understanding, experience and ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation affecting the work of the position, such as the NSW Environmental Planning and Assessment Act, 1979 and NSW National Parks and Wildlife Act, 1974.
  • Skills in research, investigation, analysis and interpretation of environmental planning, strategic planning and policy issues and the ability to visualise end developments.
  • A current valid driver's licence.
