About the role
The primary objective of the
Senior Telematics AI Engineer
to devise, architect and implement AI/neural network/machine learning initiatives primarily in the Directed Technologies business unit, driving integration into product lines as broad as Digital Video Recorder (DVR) video and audio processing, telematics and vehicle data, consumer and medical electronics, and IoT while advancing AI applications for internal process optimisation including testing and production automation. This newly created role will see you lead and deliver efforts to improve product capability and differentiation, operational efficiency, product quality, enhance production efficiency, refine product road mapping, and optimise customer experiences.

How you will make an impact
The
Senior Telematics AI Engineer
role delivers strategic value across operational, customer facing and corporate functions emphasising cross functional collaboration and innovation. This role will see you:
- Support the architectural vision and design for AI-enabled telematics solutions to priority business challenges.
- Provide high-level, hands-on expertise and leadership in full stack software development, including embedded systems such as embedded data and vision processing applications, and sophisticated user of generative software and AI engineering tools.
- Exemplify modern development methods, approaches and practices for software development for secure, reliable enterprise systems.
- Develop custom embedded firmware and back-end systems unlocking value from Directed's data to give powerful new capabilities to customers and staff.
- Enable Directed's products and core systems by developing innovative AI capabilities, leveraging video, audio, telematics data and diagnostic information to provide real operational solutions to vehicle fleet operators and international OEM companies.
- Develop and test AI-driven tools to optimise end-of-line SMT testing, TAKT time analysis, and predictive inventory management, EDM creation, product lifecycle analysis, product trends, reducing downtime and improving throughput at Directed's Melbourne facility, on customer systems and across all divisions.
- Work closely with teams from hardware & software engineering, product development, sales and marketing, support, architects and the executive teams to bring multi-disciplinary technologies to market; leveraging hyper-agile AI methodologies to rapidly develop and deploy products and features.
The successful candidate
Our ideal candidate for the
Senior Telematics AI Engineer
role will confidently demonstrate:
- A proven track record in senior telematics-related engineering roles (e.g. Senior Engineer, Embedded AI Solutions Lead) with hands-on experience in addressing complex engineering challenges in embedded and telematics fields.
- Experience in an AI, machine learning, or data science role (e.g. AI Architect, Lead Data Scientist, AI Solutions Lead) delivering production-grade solutions.
- Hands-on experience with deep learning, neural networks, and generative AI, ideally in both cloud and edge deployment scenarios, and familiar with available embedded AI models
- Successful delivery of end-to-end embedded AI projects from the requirements gathering, scoping and feasibility through to production deployment and post-launch optimisation.
- Exposure to vendor and partner management, especially with cloud providers (e.g. AWS, Azure, GCP) and silicon and AI tooling vendors.
- Designing scalable, maintainable AI system architectures; integrating models with IoT, telematics, and real-time platforms.
