About BGS

Founded in 1882, Brighton Grammar is an Anglican school passionate about developing, inspiring and guiding each boy to achieve his personal best in every way. The school's cutting-edge teaching and learning techniques, supported by a research centre, attract the best minds in education.

In the Secondary School, we strive to instil a culture of excellence and achievement by encouraging each boy to strive for his personal best in every endeavour. Students are encouraged to push boundaries, to contribute and to become involved in a diverse range of programs across academics, the arts, sport, music, outdoor education and community service. As an educator in our Secondary School, you will play a key role in supporting the development of our boys as you engage with them in areas beyond the classroom.

The role

Applications are currently sought from experienced Food Technology teachers to join our team in this full time, ongoing position.

As we will be offering the subject to students beyond Years 7 to 9 for the first time, this is therefore a great opportunity for the successful applicant to play a pivotal role in the development of the curriculum across the senior years, whilst also working in our state of the art Secondary School kitchen, which will open Term 4, 2025.

Commencing January 2026, you will be responsible for using evidence-based teaching strategies to deliver a curriculum that engages and challenges each student in line with the school's effective learner model.

To be successful in the role, you will be required to demonstrate:

  • Experience teaching Food Technology across Years 10 to 12.
  • Effective classroom management skills to maximise learning opportunities for students.
  • A strong understanding of the principles of the science of learning.
  • Experience in delivering a knowledge-based curriculum that encourages and supports innovation amongst the students.
  • Experience using evidence-informed teaching strategies based on the work of prominent educational researchers including Barak Rosenshine, Doug Lemov, John Hattie and Jim Knight.
  • Use of explicit instruction techniques and frequent formative assessment to check for student understanding.
  • Knowledge of research findings relevant to student learning and education.
  • A pursuit of continuous improvement and self-reflection as a teacher.
  • A commitment to collaborate with colleagues in planning, implementing and reviewing curriculum through the design and editing of shared resources.
  • The ability to establish and foster relationships with students, staff and parents.
  • A willingness to be actively involved in the cultural, pastoral and co-curricular activities of the School.

VIT Registration is essential for this position.

Why work for us?

  • Opportunity to lead the way in the Food Technology curriculum.
  • Work in a brand new kitchen, opening in January 2026.
  • Strong focus on your professional development and growth.
  • Rich and diverse co-curricular involvement (only one season of sport).
