Primary objective

The Executive Director leads and directs Bushfires NT in operational mitigation, preparedness and response activities and delivers on NT

Government commitments, policy, legislative and regulatory directives for bushfire management and related public safety throughout the

NT. The position provides strategic policy and risk management advice to the Minister, Commissioner and Bushfires Council.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Deliver a bushfires public safety service throughout the Northern Territory.

  1. Manage the human, financial and physical resources of Bushfires NT and contribute towards the overall strategic direction of the

department to achieve government objectives.

  1. Provide technical information, strategic advice and professional services to the Minister, the public sector and the Bushfires Council

and regional bushfires committees.

4. Fulfil the legislated position of Chief Fire Control Officer for the NT, and Executive Officer to the Bushfires Council.

  1. Develop and maintain effective collaborative partnerships to negotiate complex and politically sensitive outcomes at all levels of

government and with external stakeholders.

6. Oversee delivery of support, coordination and resources to Volunteer Bushfire Brigades.

  1. Oversee the development and implementation of innovative and cost-effective policies, strategies and programs to optimise land

management and bushfire prevention outcomes.

  1. Assess, allocate, and report on the use of government resources to improve bushfire management.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Executive level management and leadership skills with ability to manage multidisciplinary and remote teams across the Northern

Territory.

2. Ability to collaboratively develop, articulate and advocate a vision, and establish a commitment to agency goals and values and promote

an outcome focused work culture.

3. High level strategic, conceptual, analytical and collaborative skills including the ability to interpret and manage the social, political, and

organisational environment.

4. Communicates confidently in a clear, concise and articulate manner with ability to translate complex information clearly and concisely

for diverse audiences including the media.

5. Ability to maintain high level professional performance including the ability to manage pressure and change and modify approaches to

suit changing stakeholder requirements.

6. Knowledge of NT bushfire and land management legislation and priorities.

  1. Contemporary emergency, incident and disaster management experience.

Desirable

1. Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline.

The position is located at Acacia Hills, 50 km from Darwin. The incumbent will require a Working with Children Card and a current criminal

history check. A criminal history will not exclude an applicant from this position unless it is relevant to the position. During periods of

heightened operational activity, the incumbent will be required to provide operational support across the Territory, including travel and

work in remote locations.
