About the opportunity

The Sydney Conservatorium of Music are seeking to appoint an Associate Lecturer in Musicology - Theory and Analysis (Education Focused). This is a fixed term, 1 year appointment (maternity leave replacement.)

This ideal candidate will have a background in Western Art music, with experience teaching music theory and analysis at undergraduate levels, and have publications, or a plan for publications relative to opportunity. It would be desirable to have a secondary area of music-theoretical expertise (e.g. history of music theory, musicology topics, etc.)

An Associate Lecturer (Education Focused) dedicates the majority of their contribution to teaching and teaching-related activities (up to 70%), with up to 20% research and 10% governance, service, and engagement.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

• undertake a role in educational innovation, curriculum design and review, contributing to outstanding educational delivery and outcomes
• design and engage in high-quality teaching and learning experiences which meet the University's expectations and standards for education
• deliver outstanding teaching and learning outcomes for students
• develop teaching and subject materials, working with more senior academics within the University
• through research and scholarly creative work, contribute to knowledge within your discipline or area of expertise, particularly as it relates to teaching and learning in your discipline
• develop and refine your research skills, particularly as they relate to evaluating and improving teaching and learning in your discipline
• maintain quality, standards and excellence in your educational activities and output
• contribute to the governance, leadership, and engagement work in your school.

About you

• a completed Postgraduate research degree in music
• experience in teaching Western tonal harmony of the common practice era at tertiary level, including figured bass, species counterpoint and counterpoint in the style of J.S. Bach
• ability to work with a wide range of student abilities in music theory, and to give feedback through regular assignment marking
• ability to teach into subjects that explore a range of musicological subfields, and strengthen students' reading/comprehension, critical thinking and academic writing skills.
