Primary objective

This role provides high-level strategic communications advice and leadership for NT Fire and Emergency Service, overseeing media,

marketing, public relations, and community engagement across regional and remote areas. It drives unit priorities, leads and manages staff,

and builds partnerships with NT Government agencies and non-government organisations to strengthen NT Fire and Emergency Service's

reputation and service to the community.

Context statement

The Director Media and Communications works closely with the NTFES senior executive team, clients, media, stakeholders, service

providers and the Minister's Office to provide high-level representation and strategic communications leadership. The role manages

multiple demands in a dynamic environment, leading research, engagement, change management and emergency management public

information support functions, while driving effective communication strategies across the agency and whole-of-government initiatives.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Provide effective leadership and resource management for the Media and Communications Unit to ensure delivery of a high standard

of service and advice.

2. Provide high-level advice to the executive, Commissioner, and Minister's Office on matters relating to media, brand management, public

information, communications, and issues management.

3. Lead major communications and public relations projects, overseeing planning, logistics and resource allocation while managing media,

political and stakeholder considerations in accordance with government strategies, policies, and procedures.

  1. Develop, implement, and maintain policies and procedures for the department's communications and media functions to ensure

consistency and compliance with government standards.

  1. Build and maintain strong professional and strategic networks and collaborative partnerships across the department, public sector,

government, and industry, and provide high-level representation at inter-agency, whole-of-government, and national working groups.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Demonstrated strategic, conceptual, analytical and innovation skills including the ability to manage and interpret the political

environment from a community safety perspective.

2. Demonstrated executive level experience driving and achieving strategic objectives in communications, marketing, and media

engagement for a frontline organisation.

3. Extensive knowledge and experience in providing leadership, guidance, and budget and people management to ensure the team

achieves high quality outcomes.

4. Sound understanding of the promotion of strategic planning and evidence-based decision making in relation to the delivery of successful

outcomes within a complex service delivery environment.

5. High-level communication and interpersonal skills with an ability to work under pressure, build technical and strategic capability within

the team, build and maintain partnerships across the organisation and community.

6. Exceptional collaborative and influential skills with a demonstrated ability to establish and sustain productive working relationships and

strategic alliances with key internal and external stakeholders and demonstrated sound professional judgement and political acumen.

Desirable

1. Tertiary qualifications relevant to the position.

2. A willingness to work extended hours and be on call as required.

3. Significant knowledge and understanding of the NT emergency management arrangements.

4. Public Information qualifications in the Australasian Inter-service Incident Management System.
