OzGrav Postdoctoral Research Fellow or Research Fellow in Cosmology

About the Role

Swinburne University of Technology invites applications for a research position within the ARC Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery (OzGrav), working with the research group led by Professor Chris Blake. The successful applicant will undertake fundamental research in observational cosmology, with a particular focus on using the large-scale structure of the Universe and distance indicators to explore and refine our understanding of the cosmological model. Candidates will also be encouraged to pursue related independent research aligned with the goals of the group and the broader OzGrav Centre.

Potential research activities include performing cosmological analyses of galaxy peculiar velocity datasets, investigating correlations between large-scale structure and distance indicators to probe cosmological parameters, and improving distance-ladder methods using supernovae, standard sirens, or fast radio bursts. The candidate may also have the opportunity to join international collaborations such as the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) and the 4-metre Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope (4MOST). They will be part of the OzGrav research team at Swinburne and will be encouraged to collaborate with researchers across the national OzGrav network.

This position can be offered at either Academic Level A or B depending on qualifications and skills of the successful candidate. 

About You

To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:

• Prior research experience in cosmological large-scale structure analysis
• Prior research experience using cosmological distance indicators such as peculiar velocity datasets, supernovae, standard sirens, or fast radio bursts
• Demonstrated track record of refereed research publications
• Demonstrated knowledge of statistical techniques and computational methods

Qualifications

A PhD in physics/astrophysics, with research interests in cosmological physics or a closely-related field
