Lead Analyst – Australian Coal Mining (Australia – Remote)

The Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) is seeking an experienced professional to oversee IEEFA's research on the Australian coal mining sector as a Lead Analyst.

We are looking for an analyst with deep knowledge of the energy sector and hands-on experience in financial analysis and policy influencing. This analyst would have a good understanding of the impacts of the global transition to renewable energy in power generation and steel manufacturing on Australian coal production and exports.

The Lead Analyst would have experience developing evidence-based and narrative-led reports to influence government and finance stakeholders and be comfortable representing their research in the media. They would be self-motivated in pursuit of excellence, collaborative to lead the team and flexible to be effective.

IEEFA is an NGO/ not-for-profit that conducts research and analysis on financial and economic issues related to energy markets, trends, and policies. Headquartered in the United States, IEEFA has a team of 70+ analysts and communications personnel located in 15 countries across the globe. IEEFA produces a significant volume of original research, as well as ongoing analysis and reports on issues affecting energy industries. Responsibilities

  • Write original, compelling, professional reports and commentaries for publication

  • Serve as a spokesperson, creating and delivering presentations for public, media, and industry briefings

  • Set a strategy for the team - including strategic goals, a research plan and influencing approach - and ensure that it is implemented

  • Conduct cutting-edge financial analysis, financial modelling, and market analysis with integrity to evaluate key market trends for Australian coal production and exports

  • Collect data from established datasets and credible sources, including horizon scanning for energy and finance news through articles, annual reports, investor presentations, and industry reports on global energy markets and investments

  • Structure, draft and review reports, submissions, press releases and presentations

  • Establish relationships and engage with relevant external stakeholders (e.g. investors, project partners, government departments) in Australia to influence policy and investment decisions

  • Contribute to disseminating research findings through active media and social media presence and representation of IEEFA at meetings and industry events

  • Manage performance and day-to-day issues for the Australian Coal team and suggest areas of improvement, ensure high quality, timeliness and relevance of coal team publications

  • Work collaboratively with IEEFA colleagues in Australia and the region to ensure research alignment and effective communication approaches

  • Support fundraising efforts through the development of proposals and monitoring of impact

  • Commitment to IEEFA's mission to accelerate the transition to a diverse, sustainable, and profitable energy economy

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of demonstrated experience in energy or related field

  • A Master's degree in finance, economics, accounting, engineering and/or with professional certifications (e.g. CFA) or appropriate and relevant market-oriented experience in lieu of those degrees

  • Expert understanding of finance, economics and quantitative analysis.

  • Comprehensive experience analysing financial reporting and market analyses

  • Excellent writing skills demonstrated through publications, reports, and commentaries

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written) and with good political judgment to media, finance and government stakeholders

  • Proven capacity to act proactively and lead team with clarity and confidence.

  • Understanding of finance and policy landscape in energy markets, with a focus on Australia

  • Proven track record of producing precise, error-free work with strong attention to detail.

  • High degree of technological proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word, and demonstrated ability to learn new software and applications

  • Commitment to IEEFA's mission to accelerate the transition to a diverse, sustainable, and profitable economy

Compensation and Benefits

Full-time employment contract with remuneration A$165,00-185,080 base, plus super. Our competitive benefits package includes annual leave (20 days per year), personal/carer's leave (10 days per year), a Professional Development Allowance, an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), a home office set-up stipend, a monthly mobile phone allowance, and technology equipment provided.

Work Schedule

Full-time, 38 hours/week, with occasional evening or weekend work as required.

Location and Travel

Lead Analyst – Australian Coal Mining will work remotely and may be based anywhere in Australia. Some travel is required. All global team members attend IEEFA's annual conference and international team retreat. Quarterly in person team meetings alternate between Sydney and Melbourne.

Physical Demand and Work Environment.

Must be able to work for prolonged periods at a computer. Computer work can involve repetitive motion, eyestrain, back and neck strain.
