About the Organisation
The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) is the peak body representing psychiatrists in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. The College is committed to advancing psychiatry through world-class training, education, and advocacy to improve mental health outcomes for communities.
Guided by strong values of respect, collaboration, and excellence, RANZCP works closely with members, governments, and partners to promote accessible, culturally safe, and equitable mental health care.
You'll be joining an inclusive team that includes Lived and Living Experience Advisors and a Māori Cultural Advisor (Kaiārahi). The group is collaborative and forward thinking, passionate about embedding cultural safety, inclusion, and innovation across all that we do.
About the Role The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health Liaison Officer will strengthen The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists's cultural connection and engagement with communities. This identified role provides cultural guidance across the organisation, supports program development, and contributes to embedding cultural safety and inclusion in service delivery.
The position works closely with internal teams and stakeholders to enhance culturally informed psychiatric care and help deliver on the College's reconciliation and inclusion commitments. These roles offer an exciting opportunity to influence systems and practices that support better mental health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, without providing direct clinical or consumer-facing services.

- Strengthen cultural safety and inclusion across the College through engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
- Provide cultural guidance and support the delivery of programs such as Cultural Support Plans and the Specialist Training Program.
- Build the capacity of teams to deliver culturally safe and responsive services.
- Work collaboratively across the organisation to uphold RANZCP values and foster an inclusive workplace.
- Contribute to the implementation of the Reconciliation Action Plan and participate in relevant initiatives.
- Promote safe work practices and undertake additional responsibilities as required.
Essential Requirements
- Demonstrated experience working within health, public health, policy, community, or other relevant sectors, with an understanding of service delivery systems.
- Comprehensive understanding and experience engaging respectfully and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- Strong knowledge of culturally safe practice, including the impacts of colonisation and intergenerational trauma.
- Awareness or lived/living experience of issues impacting healthcare provision for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, including social determinants of health.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to adapt to different audiences and settings.
- Demonstrated cross-cultural awareness and ability to support inclusive service delivery and engagement with diverse communities.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively in a team and contribute to a positive, inclusive workplace.
- Proficiency in standard software applications (e.g. word processing, spreadsheets).
- High level of attention to detail and commitment to quality outcomes.
- Willingness to learn, grow, and continuously improve both personally and professionally.
Desirable Requirements
- Postgraduate qualifications in health science or a related discipline.
- Ability to travel regionally, interstate, or internationally as required.
- National Police Check (required prior to commencement).
Why join us?
At RANZCP, we value people and their wellbeing. You'll enjoy:
- Monthly Rostered Day Off (RDO)
- Gifted leave at Christmas
- A 37.5-hour work week supporting work-life balance
- Supportive and inclusive team culture
