The Role
The Aboriginal Court Liaison Officer is an integral member within the Statewide Community and Court Liaison Service (SCCLS). The SCCLS aims to assist the court magistrates with the diversion of mentally ill, disordered and/or cognitively impaired individuals from the courts into the community for treatment.
The role of the Aboriginal Court Liaison Officer is to assist with the diversion of defendants who have or are suspected of having a mental illness, mental disorder and/or cognitive impairment from the Criminal Justice System (Court and Correctional Centres) into the community. This will include a focus on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people by assessing unmet needs and risks, linking them with culturally appropriate care and providing follow up support to improve their likelihood of being successfully diverted to community based mental health care.
As an Aboriginal identified position, this role involves the provision of education, cultural expertise, advice and input into care, management and diversion of Aboriginal clients that are accessing SCCLS. This position aims to ensure that SCCLS deliver culturally appropriate and safe mental health care to Aboriginal clients. The position will work in collaboration with all SCCLS clinicians and Psychiatrists to achieve the best diversion outcomes for Aboriginal clients. In addition, it will establish and maintain a positive health and a safety culture including the provision of supervision and professional development opportunities to enhance clinical skills and consumer outcomes.
Essential Requirements
- This is an identified Aboriginal Mental Health position. Applicants must be a person of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent. An applicant race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorized under section 14 of the Antidiscrimination Act 1977. Aboriginal applicants must demonstrate Aboriginality in addition to addressing the selection criteria.
- Preferably five years full time equivalent post registration clinical experience with at least 3 full time equivalent in an acute mental health setting
- Must hold a current NSW Driver Licence and be willing to travel as and when required.
- You must take all reasonable care for yourself and others and comply with any reasonable instruction, policies and procedures relating to work health and safety and wellbeing.
Djirruwang Program graduates
- Bachelor Degree or higher level relative to role (including Bachelor Health Science (Mental Health) for Djirruwang Program graduates.
Clinical Nurse Consultant Grade 2
- Current authority to practice as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia.
- Current full registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)..
- Must hold a post graduate qualification in mental health.
Occupational Therapist Level 4
- Must hold qualifications recognized for registration with the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia.
- Must hold general registration with the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia.
Accredited Counsellor qualification Counsellor Level 4
- Minimum four-year full time equivalent sequence of study via either pathway A or B below and hold membership or demonstrate eligibility for listing on the Australian Register of Counsellors & Psychotherapists (ARCAP) as either a Division A PACFA minimum Clinical Registrant or Division B ACA minimum Level 3.
- Pathway A. Minimum three-year bachelor-level accredited degree in a health-related discipline (psychology, social work, occupational therapy or other relevant discipline) and minimum two years full time equivalent post-graduate higher degree study in counselling via a Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) or Australian Counselling Association (ACA) accredited course.
- Pathway B. Minimum three-year Bachelor of Counselling degree via a PACFA or ACA-accredited higher degree course and minimum one-year full time equivalent post-graduate higher degree study in counselling via a PACFA or ACA accredited course.
Senior Psychologist and Clinical/Forensic Psychologist
- Minimum of a four-year accredited psychology degree and hold general registration with Psychology Board of Australia under Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Forensic/Clinical Psychologist - Master's degree or higher in forensic or clinical psychology that is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council and holds full registration with the Psychology Board of Australia (AHPRA) with forensic or clinical area of practice endorsement. Approved or eligible for approval as a Psychology Board of Australia approved supervisor.
Social Worker Level 4
- Minimum Bachelor's degree in social work which provides eligibility for membership of the Australian Association
