Primary objective

This classroom support officer will work under the direction of school leaders and classroom teachers to support students to

improve their attendance, engagement, literacy, and numeracy outcomes. Strategic programs and approaches at CMS include

Schoolwide Positive Behaviour and the CMS Instructional Model.

Context statement

Centralian Middle School is the only government middle school in Alice Springs. It has a multicultural enrolment of around 360

students, including approximately 65% Indigenous students. The school has a diverse student cohort ranging from those achieving

at and above grade level standards in literacy to numeracy to those requiring significant additional support. Through targeted

intervention programs and Culturally Responsive Pedagogy, CMS is committed to empowering students to achieve successful

learning outcomes and pathways.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Actively support the planning, preparation, and implementation of educational programs for students under the direction of

school leaders, coaches, and teachers.

2. Develop and effectively maintain appropriate working relationships with students, families and work colleagues whilst

maintaining confidentiality.

3. Assist teachers with the planning, preparation and delivery of activities for students including culturally responsive lessons.

4. Assist with the supervision of students and tutoring as required.

5. Undertake data entry in school data systems to ensure accurate maintenance of manual and computerised student records.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Successful experience with caring for students who have multiple needs to support their wellbeing, communication,

social/interpersonal skills, and academic skills.

2. Demonstrated experience in working collaboratively and communicating effectively to support learning and productive cross-

cultural partnerships.

  1. Proven ability to communicate effectively with children and adults using various communication strategies and appropriate

interpersonal skills.

  1. Demonstrated experience in undertaking a range of administrative tasks, or ability to learn on the job quickly.
  2. Observation, monitoring and recording of children's learning progress.

Desirable

1. Certificate III in School-based Education Support.
