I'm looking for a mentor or tutor who can guide me through my engineering projects while teaching me how to approach problems like an engineer — how to start, explore, experiment, and learn independently.

My current project is a wearable therapeutic device designed to explore electronics (particularly power electronics and embedded systems) through a hands-on, project-based approach. The goal is learning, experimentation, and conceptual exploration, rather than creating a commercial product. I'm looking for a mentor with experience designing and building projects end-to-end.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience taking engineering or design projects from concept to completion
  • Strong knowledge of power electronics and electronics design
  • Ability to explain concepts clearly and adapt to my learning pace
  • Commitment to inclusivity, ethical design, and social impact

What the Role Involves

  • Reviewing my project ideas and providing detailed, constructive feedback
  • Guiding me on how to think like an engineer — planning, testing, and iterative learning — and suggesting ways to rapidly prototype, along with essential tools and skills for that process
  • Offering insight into relevant engineering principles, design considerations, and learning resources — for example, providing a general overview of concepts like buck and boost converters, and recommending exercises (builds, calculations, etc.) to deepen understanding. I'll study independently and then get feedback during our sessions
  • Challenging and critiquing my thought process (not spoon-feeding answers)
  • Helping me stay focused and accountable
  • While this project is electronics-heavy, I plan to pursue other kinds of engineering projects over time. Broader skills could lead to longer-term collaboration

About Me

I'm a self-driven learner passionate about engineering and social impact. Due to a disability, I haven't been able to fully participate in university, so I'm building my journey through self-directed projects. I value curiosity, hands-on learning, creative problem solving, and mentorship that emphasises both technical and ethical thinking.

I'm particularly interested in working with a mentor who is reflective about the social impact of technology, values inclusivity, and approaches engineering with a mindset of equity and ethical responsibility.

Details

  • Remote sessions (online)
  • 1–2 sessions per week (around 1 hour each)
  • I'll share updates and challenges from my projects, and you'll provide feedback, insights, and next steps during our meetings
  • I'd like to start with a one-month trial period, after which we can review progress and decide whether to continue or adjust the approach

Compensation: Paid mentorship opportunity, 1 hour per week online. I'm happy to discuss a fair rate, typically $50–$70 for early-career mentors or students, and $80–$100 for professionals with extensive experience

Job Types: Casual, Freelance

Pay: $50.00 – $100.00 per hour

Expected hours: 1 – 2 per week
