About the role
The Social Worker / Family Services Practitioner sits within the Family and Children's Services, Community Wellbeing Branch.
This role offers an exciting opportunity to provide tailored support to families with children aged 0–17 years, strengthening family connections and improving outcomes for children and young people.
This role plays a key part in delivering impactful, early intervention services for families experiencing vulnerability, supporting the safety, stability, and wellbeing of children while contributing to the City of Melbourne's strategic vision of a liveable, healthy, and vibrant community.
Working closely with families from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, you'll deliver case management, counselling, and group programs, while collaborating with community partners and agencies to ensure families are linked to the right supports at the right time.
A little more about the role
- Deliver assessment and case management for families experiencing vulnerability, guided by the Best Interests Framework and Integrated Family Services model
- Develop Child and Family Action Plans to address risks, build on strengths, and improve outcomes for children and young people
- Facilitate parent support and therapeutic group programs, working with community partners to respond to identified needs
- Engage with a wide range of stakeholders, community services and external agencies to provide holistic, wraparound supports for families

About you
You are a compassionate and skilled practitioner who thrives on supporting families, strengthening relationships, and improving outcomes for children. You bring trauma-informed practice, cultural sensitivity, and a strong commitment to collaborative service delivery.
You may also be:
- Experienced in family case management and group facilitation within child and family services
- Confident in working with diverse communities, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, CALD communities, and LGBTIQA+ families
What your experience might look like
- Bachelor or Master of Social Work (AASW recognised) or a relevant qualification in Psychology, Family Therapy, or Community Social Services
- Demonstrated knowledge of child development, family intervention models, and trauma-informed practice
- Casework and case management experience, with the ability to manage complex caseloads in line with legislative frameworks (Child Wellbeing and Safety Act 2005, Children, Youth and Families Act 2005 and Child Safe Standards)
- Strong skills in culturally competent practice, with experience supporting families affected by family violence, mental health issues, immigration, legal, social isolation, or housing instability
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively across diverse communities, with interpreters and within multidisciplinary teams
