About the role

The Graduate Speech Pathologist provides culturally-responsive speech pathology services for Aboriginal children, youth and their families to optimise the child's development. The position supports children and youth living with a range of disabilities, particularly neuro- developmental disabilities including Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

This role is specific to the provision of assessment and therapeutic supports to National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) participants.

Services are delivered through the NDIS as part of a multidisciplinary team alongside occupational therapy, physiotherapy and Aboriginal Allied Health Assistants. The Graduate Speech Pathologist supports NDIS participants with speech sound disorders, expressive and receptive language delays and disorders, emotional regulation skills. Assessment and intervention aims to support social participation using therapeutic strategies including the implementation of Augmentative and Alternative Communication.

Wherever possible, the Graduate Speech Pathologist fosters self-determination of clients and community by facilitating choice and control over service delivery. Therapy services are delivered with supervision and support from clinical supervisors and managers.

The role is primarily based in Mparntwe (Alice Springs) in schools, homes, childcare centres, clinic and community spaces; occasional remote travel may be a requirement of this position.

What are we looking for?

Someone to fit our team with the following requirements:

  • Bachelor of Speech Pathology or equivalent qualification with registration as a Certified Practising Speech Pathologist (CPSP) with Speech Pathology Australia.
  • Knowledge of community-based speech pathology service within a multidisciplinary team, including working with a broad range of clients from varying socioeconomic backgrounds with a wide range of functional impairments.
  • Flexible and creative approach to providing speech pathology services that is responsive to the needs of the community.
  • Ability to partner with service users, including them in goal setting, care planning and care co-ordination to identify priorities.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to and work in remote locations for up to a week at a time, including travel on light aircraft.
  • An understanding of the historical and contemporary context of Aboriginal health, the social determinants of health, and the philosophy and practice of Aboriginal Community Control.
  • Current driver's licence (or ability to obtain).
  • (Desirable) Is of Aboriginal descent; identifies as an Aboriginal person; and is accepted as an Aboriginal person by the Aboriginal community.
  • (Desirable) Knowledge of NDIS funding requirements.
  • (Desirable) Experience in working within an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation.
