About The Role
The Principal Risk Governance role is a high-profile role within the Group Risk, Insurance and Audit (GRIA) function pivotal in providing technical expertise in the design, improvement, and governance of BHP's Risk Framework. This role involves developing and implementing strategies and plans to enhance the application of the Risk Framework and coaching the business to uplift capability and understanding. Additionally, the role requires maintaining the governance framework and capability materials that support the Frameworks implementation.

In this role, you will build a detailed understanding of BHP's Risk Framework and the universe of risks to which BHP is exposed through our diverse, global operations. You will leverage this knowledge to apply and integrate risk governance accountabilities across the organisation, promoting strong collaboration between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd line teams. Working closely with Risk Business Partners and other stakeholders, you will focus on the practical application of risk management principles within BHP, ensuring that risk governance accountabilities are consistently applied and understood. You will challenge the status quo and listen to our customers to identify and deliver continuous improvement opportunities as we strive to get better at what we do every day.

As The Principal Risk Governance, Your Responsibilities Will Include

  • Risk Framework Development: Develop, implement and improve various aspects of the risk management framework, and coaches the business to uplift capability with and enhance the adoption of the risk management framework
  • Risk Governance: Enhance the application of the Three Lines Model (3LM) and the risk management framework, coaching the business to uplift capability and understanding.
  • Governance Framework and Capability Materials: Develop, maintain, and improve the governance framework and capability materials that support the Framework implementation.
  • Collaboration and Stakeholder Management: Promote strong collaboration between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd line teams, facilitate the sharing of insights, and manage diverse internal and external stakeholders.
  • Risk Oversight and Monitoring: Provide coaching and support to 2nd line teams on their roles in risk oversight, standard setting, and monitoring, and assess the application of 3LM across BHP's Risk Architecture.
  • Communication and Reporting: Conduct presentations, facilitate workshops, and develop technical reports that are clear to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Governance Practices and Business Context: Design and implement governance/assurance practices, apply an understanding of the business context to enhance decision-making, and engage the capabilities of the entire organisation.
  • The position is open for candidates coming from Santiago or Brisbane or Perth or Adelaide or Melbourne

About You
We are looking for someone who excels in stakeholder engagement and influence, with a talent for working collaboratively in a fast-paced team environment. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills, enabling them to identify and convey key messages to diverse audiences effectively.

Ideally, You Will Have The Following Experience

  • Significant experience working with governance, risk, compliance, and assurance management systems, including leading the design and development of various aspects of risk management frameworks.
  • Working knowledge of professional risk management standards such as ISO31000, COSO, and RIMS, as well as relevant regulatory frameworks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (including attention to detail, presentation, facilitation and storytelling techniques).
  • Strong ability to partner with senior stakeholders to build a culture of collaboration and achieve objectives through respectful challenge and influence.
  • Experience in mining, heavy manufacturing, and/or industrial industry work environments is preferred.
  • A degree in a relevant field such as law, engineering, or business is required, and professional accreditation or certification in risk management is recommended.
