About The Opportunity
The NSW Health Pathology Cytology laboratory at Nepean Hospital is currently seeking a passionate and dedicated individual to join our team as a Medical Laboratory Scientist on permanent full-time basis. Whether you're an experienced professional or just beginning your journey in Cytopathology, this is an excellent opportunity to work in a dynamic, collaborative, and high-quality diagnostic environment
We welcome applications from candidates who hold CT(ASC) certification or are currently working towards achieving it. Candidates with experience in diagnostic laboratories and a willingness to participate in or undertake training in Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) procedures—including Rapid On-Site Evaluation (ROSE) in Radiology, Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS), and Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) settings—are strongly encouraged to apply. As well as candidates who are motivated, enthusiastic, and committed to further developing their skills and knowledge in Cytology.
This position is based within the Cytology Unit of the Anatomical Pathology Department at Nepean Hospital, part of the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District. At Nepean Hospital, you'll be part of a supportive and inclusive team that values learning and collaboration. We offer access to structured Cytology training, including support for CT(ASC) certification, and opportunities to engage with Senior Pathologists and Hospital Scientists in a well-regarded diagnostic setting. You will benefit from an environment that encourages professional growth, exposure to diverse and complex cases, and a strong commitment to quality and patient-centred care. We are committed to delivering high-quality pathology services that directly support patient outcomes across hospital and outpatient settings
Success in this role requires a strong foundation in Cytology, high attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to safe, collaborative, and patient-centred laboratory practice.
What We Can Offer You
- Accrued Days Off in addition to Annual Leave
- Generous salary packaging options and other fringe benefits
- Corporate wellbeing programs, including the Fitness Passport
- Learning and development opportunities, including in-house training with RTO My Health Learning
What You'll Be Doing
The purpose of this role is to contribute to the delivery of high-quality diagnostic Cytology services within the Anatomical Pathology department at Nepean Hospital. The Cytology Hospital Scientist is responsible for performing, or learning to perform, a wide range of non-gynaecological specimen tasks, including preparation, microscopic screening, diagnostic interpretation, and reporting.
A key aspect of this role is participation in Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) procedures, including Rapid On-Site Evaluation (ROSE) during Radiology, EBUS, and EUS-guided procedures, to assess specimen adequacy and support real-time clinical decision-making.
The position also contributes to internal and external quality assurance activities, continuous quality improvement, and professional development, supporting the ongoing review and optimisation of laboratory practices. This ensures alignment with operational procedures, NPAAC guidelines, NATA accreditation standards, Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation, and broader compliance frameworks.
Interested in joining Australia's largest public pathology service? Apply now by addressing the following questions:
- Bachelor Degree or higher degree in Science/Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent qualification, with subjects relevant to pathology from a recognised tertiary institution and current CT (ASC) certification or willingness to complete.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the delivery of pathology services relevant to the laboratory, including use of Laboratory Information Systems, Patient Systems and Quality Control Systems and computer programs such as Microsoft Office suite
- Willingness and ability to participate in non-gynaecological specimen preparation, including staining and processing techniques relevant to Cytology
- Customer focused approach displaying well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with customers, patients and clinical and laboratory staff, along with report writing skills, statistical evaluation of scientific data and the ability to effectively communicate policies and procedures
- Ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner and to manage competing priorities to meet deadlines
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment while working autonomously to deliver results within specified timeframes and contribute to a range of diagnostic skills relevant to the laboratory
- Display initiative, problem solving and analytical skills including an ability to apply established principles in a pathology laboratory and investigate and resolve general and complex issues within the laboratory environment
- Sound understanding of legislation, policies and requirements that impact the laboratory environment including work health and safety and privacy requirements
