This clinical position is available to either advanced trainees of the College of Physicians in Paediatrics, Adult Medicine or other recognised colleges. These positions can be recognised for Advanced Training in Clinical Genetics (non-core), Medical Oncology (non-core) or Cancer Genetics (core). There are 2 x 1.0 FTE positions. One trainee is at POWH Hereditary Cancer Centre and Royal Prince Alfred Cancer Genetics. The other position is shared between Westmead Familial Cancer Service and Royal North Shore Hospital Familial Cancer Service. Both positions also have outreach clinics via video conference.
Successful applicants will be involved in adult cancer genetics, paediatric cancer genetics, endocrine genetics clinics, high risk breast clinics, possibly neurofibromatosis clinic and inpatient consultations. Genetics fellows participate in activities of the NSW and Australian clinical genetics and cancer genetics intercampus educational programs. Participation in teaching other junior staff is encouraged. Opportunities exist for some clinical research within these positions, subject to availability.
The position provides trainees with immersive, supported learning of the basic principles of clinical cancer genetics, cancer syndrome diagnosis and management, molecular tumour boards and subspecialty multidisciplinary meeting participation, genetic testing, counselling and ethical issues relevant to both cancer genetics and broader genetic practice. It will provide the applicant with a unique opportunity to become familiar with the application and interpretation of new genomic testing techniques.
The Provisional Fellow position provides advanced trainees an opportunity to further their training, developing skills important for a consultant role in the spheres of clinical care, education and training as well as research with support from the team consultants and other health care professionals. The provisional fellow role is a leadership role both within the department for other junior medical staff and medical students as well as members of the multidisciplinary team but also across the broader hospital community.
