Medical Oncology Fellow

Fixed Term Full Time

86 hours per fortnight

2026 Clinical Year

About the Role

Applications from suitably qualified candidates are invited for a Medical Oncology Fellow position at the Ballarat Regional Integrated Cancer Centre, Grampians Health. This twelve-month position, commencing in February 2026, provides comprehensive clinical and research training under the supportive supervision of a collegial and highly experienced consultant team of five full-time and five visiting medical oncologists.

Skills & Experience

Candidates should possess appropriate qualifications and postgraduate experience in oncology, along with a demonstrated commitment to oncology patient care and research activities. The position will ideally suit candidates who have either fully or partly completed advanced training in medical oncology and hold or will be eligible for specialist registration. Candidates should also possess excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • This is a clinical and research-based role. The Fellow will be actively involved in clinical trials, participate in all relevant clinical trial unit meetings and activities, and undertake independent research under the supervision of an experienced mentor. The Oncology unit has a well-established, busy, and dynamic clinical trials unit involved in multiple clinical trials, including early-phase studies. The department also maintains collaborative research relationships with metropolitan hospitals, including the Austin Hospital and other regional institutions.
  • Clinical responsibilities include participation in oncology clinics four days per week, including fortnightly outreach clinics to Horsham or Stawell. The Fellow will participate in breast, upper gastrointestinal, colorectal, urological, thoracic, neuro-oncology, head and neck, gynaecological, skin cancer and inpatient multidisciplinary team meetings and is expected to attend consultant ward rounds two to three times a week. The fellow will participate in the after-hours on-call and weekend oncology ward rounds roster, an integral component of the comprehensive training experience.
  • Academic responsibilities include participation in regular Journal Club sessions, Mortality and Morbidity meetings, and junior doctor teaching programmes. The Fellow will have protected time to attend the weekly Victorian Medical Oncology Training Group education series in Melbourne. The Fellow will have the opportunity to gain valuable teaching experience by being involved in undergraduate medical student teaching from the University of Melbourne and Deakin University.

This position provides opportunities for professional development through attendance at regional, national, and international oncology meetings and conferences, subject to leave approval from the Head of Medical Oncology. The role offers comprehensive clinical exposure to regional cancer care while enabling meaningful research contributions with publication potential.
