Your day as a Senior Policy Advisor

As a Senior Policy Advisor, you ensure the integrity and transparency of financial management within NSW government agencies. Your expertise in financial management legislation, financial reporting, and annual reporting is crucial for maintaining compliance and fostering trust in public sector financial practices. You will manage the reporting extensions, exemptions, and variations process, requiring a deep understanding of the legislative framework and the ability to navigate complex regulatory environments.

You will research, analyse, and review complex policy issues, identifying trends and developing evidence-based strategies. Your work involves continuous improvement and implementation of financial reporting and annual reporting legislation, policy, and frameworks.

You will be joining our Financial Management and Services Group and will be working within Financial Stewardship and Public Reporting Division. Read more about your future Group and Division.

The Financial Stewardship and Public Reporting Division oversees financial reporting for the sector, including the Total State Sector Accounts (TSSA) and aggregate financial data in the annual Budget. We provide leadership, develop policies, and offer advice on financial management, accounting policy, and climate disclosures.

The ideal candidate should meet the following criteria:

  • Tertiary qualifications in accounting, finance, governance, commerce, or related discipline, with CA or CPA required.
  • Experience in areas including financial management policy, compliance processes, and statutory requirements for NSW government.
  • Strong research, analytical, and strategic planning skills for evidence-based policy analysis and development.
  • Ability to convey technical and complex information clearly in plain English, using various methods suitable for the audience.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to consult and adapt approaches for multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience leading projects or policy development from start to finish.
