Primary objective

To assist the Mental Health Crisis Assessment Team (CATT) to provide cultural advice, advocacy and intervention to assist

Aboriginal people presenting with social, emotional and wellbeing concerns

Context statement

Utilising prior experience in a mental health setting, take a lead role in a Crisis Assessment Treatment Team as a cultural

advocate for Aboriginal clients and provide cultural insights to the Team to improve understanding and communication

between clinicians and Aboriginal people.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Assist CATT clinicians to provide consultation and act as a cultural advocate in ensuring access to services.

2. Provide cultural insights awareness training, and language skills to improve understanding and communication

between clinicians and Aboriginal people.

3. Contribute towards and participate in the establishment of standards and protocols for effective mental health service

delivery to Aboriginal people.

4. Support the development of strategies to improve understanding and knowledge of mental health issues for Aboriginal

people during a time of acute mental health presentation.

5. Participate in training for community-based workers ensuring a greater awareness of mental health issues.

6. Maintain appropriate documentation of cultural issues pertaining to clients in case notes and Community Care

Information System (CCIS).

7. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being

undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Sound knowledge and understanding of the factors that have impacted on the social and emotional wellbeing of

Aboriginal people accessing mental health services.

2. Demonstrated ability to self-manage within the multidisciplinary team and have relevant experience working in a

social and emotional wellbeing framework.

3. High level of oral and written communication skills with the ability to maintain confidentiality.

4. Qualifications as an Aboriginal Mental Health Worker or a willingness to complete education in Mental Health.

5. Demonstrated Information Technology skills and the ability to maintain client records.

6. An ability to interact effectively with people of diverse cultures and communicate effectively with health

professionals.

7. Possess a current Northern Territory Drivers licence or the ability to obtain one.

Desirable

1. Understanding of one or more Central Australian Aboriginal languages.
