Position Overview

The Senior Weapons Engineer is responsible for managing systems engineering activities relating to the performance of integrated weapon systems on HDA's platforms. This may encompass systems and system elements including:

  • Small, medium and large-calibre weapon platforms.
  • Ammunition and explosive ordnance.
  • Sighting/targeting systems.
  • Unmanned vehicles.
  • Guided weapons.

As the Prime Systems Integrator, HDA leads the program and is responsible for bringing together all contributing stakeholders to deliver a complete system solution with seamless integration of all elements.

Primary Responsibilities

The Senior Weapons Engineer will perform critical and complex systems engineering activities for small, medium and large calibre weapon systems, including:

  • Leading and/or supporting the planning, execution, and reporting of V&V activities to confirm system requirements are met and operational effectiveness is achieved.
  • Evaluating weapon systems and explosive ordnance to ensure they meet safety and suitability for service standards, in collaboration with safety and engineering teams.
  • Supporting the development, refinement and traceability of system requirements to ensure alignment with operational needs and regulatory standards.
  • Contribute to the integration of weapon systems onto armoured vehicle platforms, ensuring compatibility, safety, and performance through collaborative engineering and testing.
  • Identifying and assessing system hazards in collaboration with various stakeholders to mitigate risks so far as reasonably practicable.
  • Monitoring and ensuring safety aspects are incorporated into all engineering activities.
  • Developing and maintaining technical documentation in accordance with program milestones.
  • Evaluating delivered materiel against customer requirements and legislative, policy and regulatory frameworks, and contributing to the implementation of actions. Other duties as required by your supervisor

Note: The Senior Weapons Engineer may be required to travel to subcontractor and test locations which may be within Victoria, Interstate and Internationally.

Qualifications:

Mandatory:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Engineering.

Desirable:

  • Meets Engineers Australia criteria for Chartered Professional Engineer.

Experience

Important:

  • Defence systems engineering experience, particularly within the acquisition phase. Knowledge of the system lifecycle.
  • Experience managing test and evaluation activities, including developing trial instructions, recording and analysing trial data, and producing trial reports.

Desirable:

  • Understanding of the design and performance characteristics of large-, medium-, and small-calibre weapon systems.
  • Understanding of internal and external ballistics (including terminal effects).
  • Understanding and familiarity with relevant test and design standards/guidebooks (e.g. NATO D/14).
  • Understanding of explosive ordnance and weapon safety principles, including weapon danger areas, and weapon design safety mechanisms and principles.
  • Understanding of unmanned vehicle systems.
  • Understanding of Australian Defence Force weapons employment and operational context.

  • Demonstrates adaptability and can be flexible to meet the needs of the organisation.
