About the Opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity to join Metcash an experienced Data Scientist who can work under the supervision of the Data Science Lead to support the various business departments across the Food pillar to deliver insights that are data-driven, create dashboards and support the business with strategic decision making through the use of data science and statistical techniques.

In this Role

  • Partner with key stakeholders to uncover business challenges and enable data-driven decision-making. You'll dive deep into complex data, identify root causes, and translate analytical findings into clear, actionable strategies—driving growth in areas like pricing, assortment, and shelf optimisation.
  • Design and deliver insightful reports and dashboards that empower teams to make informed decisions. You'll use trend analysis and compelling data visualisation to surface opportunities, monitor performance, and flag potential issues early.
  • Build scalable data pipelines and statistical algorithms to automate the cleaning, integration, and analysis of large, complex data sets from diverse internal and external sources.
  • Leverage advanced data science techniques—from machine learning to predictive modelling—to solve real business problems. Your work will help identify optimisation opportunities across price, promotions, and range that lead to measurable market share gains.
  • Work with big data tools and environments to manage and analyse large-scale datasets. You'll validate hypotheses, extract key insights, and support business experimentation with robust analytical rigor.

You're Likely a Match If

  • Degree-qualified in a quantitative discipline such as Statistics, Mathematics or Data Science.
  • Experience in FMCG industry
  • 3-5 years experience in data science and analytics role
  • Hands-on experience with R for data modelling, automation, and development of interactive analytics applications.
  • Proficient in SQL for data extraction and manipulation across large, complex databases.
  • Advanced capability in Power BI (including DAX, Power Query, and Power Pivot) to design and deliver clear, insightful dashboards and reports.
  • Familiarity with cloud data platforms and database technologies such as Microsoft SQL Server, Azure Data Services, and AWS Redshift.
