Your role

The Engagement and Awareness role is part of the Office of the Women's Safety Commissioner.

It supports the Commissioner to raise awareness of women's safety issues, and engage the community in efforts to address domestic, family and sexual violence.

About the Team

The Office of the Women's Safety Commissioner provides oversight, leadership and advice to improve women's safety in NSW, including whole of government responses to domestic, family and sexual violence. A vital aspect of the Commissioner's role is raising community awareness and communicating the importance of women's safety through the media, social media and public events.

The team's work is highly varied and spans:

  • Media engagement
  • Hands-on social media content creation and strategy
  • Coordinating communications projects
  • Supporting the Commissioner's participation in public events

What you'll do

We're seeking a dynamic communications all-rounder to join our small team. Our work is highly varied, and this fast-paced role would suit someone who:

  • is adept at crafting nuanced messages for different audiences
  • loves engaging with the media
  • is an experienced, hands-on social media content creator and a strategic thinker
  • thrives in a creative and reactive environment.

You will be responsible for but not limited to:

  • Creating accurate and relevant communication materials for stakeholders/audiences using a variety of channels and platforms.
  • Working closely with the Commissioner to develop social media content with short turnaround times.
  • Coordinating proactive media outreach to support the Commissioner's policy and operational priorities, particularly those in the Women's Safety Commissioner's Strategic Plan
  • Coordinating reactive media engagements, developing timely talking points and briefing the Commissioner on evolving issues and related media coverage.
  • Overseeing awareness-raising and communication projects, including logistics, budgets and resource planning, ensuring effective engagement with members of the community and key stakeholders.
  • Conducting/using research to shape engagement and awareness-raising strategies and identify target audiences for programs.
  • Preparing timely and relevant data, including updates, reports, budgets and discussion papers for management and stakeholders.
  • Providing advice on communication aspects of the Commissioner's campaigns and/or programs.

What we're looking for

The ideal applicant will possess the following skills and attributes:

  • Proven ability to assist in the planning, coordination and implementation of effective communications, media, engagement and awareness raising activities in a fast-paced, dynamic team.
  • Hands-on skill as a social media strategist and content creator and adept in use of Canva, and social media management programs.
  • Experience in social community management, including management of contentious issues.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and interest in the operations of government, the political process and the media.
  • Experience working in a government agency.
  • Experience supporting senior leaders with competing priorities is an advantage.
