About the role

The Finance team are results oriented and deliver a range of financial advice and support. Access to specialist financial expertise enables managers to make informed decisions and continually improve business performance aligned to the Businesses' strategic direction. The function is primarily responsible for providing financial information, tools, analysis and insight to support business units to make more informed decisions and to drive business strategy. The function oversees the development of budgets, financial performance reporting, accounts, taxation and statutory reporting.

The Financial Controller is responsible for leading the implementation of a high quality, timely reporting and financial analysis to allow Operational Business Leaders to make on time business decisions and ensuring business meets all its financial and regulatory compliance reporting requirements.

This role develops and manages relationships with internal and external stakeholders to influence positive outcomes for the finance and accounting team and the broader rail business.

Key responsibilities include

Finance Partnering

  • Lead end-to-end financial management including budgeting, forecasting, and statutory reporting for multi entities
  • Provide financial insights and analysis to support strategic initiatives and capital projects
  • Maintain project and operations budgets within SAP
  • Prepare and manage weekly, monthly and 3-monthly rolling cashflow
  • Financial Reporting
  • Manage month-end and year-end processes, including audit preparation and liaison with external auditors within required timelines
  • Review and finalise quarterly and year-end statutory financial reports
  • Prepare Monthly, Quarterly and Annual Financial Management Reports for Operations and Projects

Financial Transactions

  • Responsible for day-to-day accounting transactions, ensuring that payments are made in a correct and timely manner in accordance with the approved Delegation of Authority (DOA)
  • Oversee the monthly Bank Account Reconciliation and Novated Lease Reconciliation processes and ensure these are performed in a timely manner
  • Liaise with financial institutions to manage banking transactions, bank guarantees and deposits
  • Facilitate and review intercompany Service Legal Agreement and Loan Agreements
  • Invoicing for rail charges and other intercompany invoicing
  • Provide support to the development and implementation of improvement initiatives relating to the use of systems in the purchasing, recording and reporting, revenue, inventory and payroll processes
  • Review and approval of payroll, including payroll tax reporting obligations, reconciliation and release of funds
  • Oversee the lodgement of Business Activity Statements (BAS), annual income tax returns (ITR's), Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT), fuel tax credit, Pay As You Go Withholding (PAYGW) and compliance with tax reporting obligations
  • Management of Fuel Management Systems to ensure correct assignment of costs and reconciliation of fuel inventory
  • Management of maintenance and updating the asset register

Financial Leadership

  • Lead the resolution of operational finance Issues (interface management between finance, procurement and operational business)
  • Develop new practices and processes to drive continuous improvement in financial reporting and analysis
  • Implement and maintain robust internal controls and risk management frameworks
  • Partner with operational leaders to improve cost efficiency and financial performance
  • Lead and mentor a small finance team, fostering a culture of accountability and development

Should you ASPIRE to join our team, you will bring:

  • Degree qualification - Accounting or Commerce
  • 10+ years' experience in a management accounting/finance role
  • CPA/CA designation
  • Demonstrable understanding of department and process interface, particularly to compliance, reporting, month-end duties and accountabilities
  • Computer proficient (Advanced Microsoft Office, working knowledge of SAP ERP)
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and professional presentation skills
  • Experience with leading teams and influencing stakeholders
  • Experience working in finance team within a heavy haul rail, mining and /or infrastructure environment is an advantage
  • Flexibility and demonstrable time management skills to deliver to strict reporting timelines
  • Ability to commute independently across company site locations to support the business as required
