About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Principal Technical Specialist – Firewalls to join a large government cyber security program. This position plays a key technical leadership role in the design, implementation, and management of enterprise firewall infrastructure, ensuring optimal performance, compliance, and network security across a complex ICT environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the deployment, upgrade, and configuration of Check Point and Palo Alto firewalls, as well as F5 LTM/GTM/WAF technologies.
- Provide technical leadership for firewall replacement and optimisation projects, ensuring alignment with security and enterprise standards.
- Integrate firewall solutions with Cisco routing and switching to maintain high availability and performance.
- Manage and optimise firewall rule bases using AlgoSec or equivalent policy management tools.
- Monitor firewall health and performance via SolarWinds or similar platforms, proactively identifying and resolving issues.
- Deliver advanced troubleshooting and root cause analysis to support both project and operational environments.
- Produce and maintain comprehensive documentation including solution designs, configuration artefacts, implementation plans, and change procedures.
- Collaborate with stakeholders and vendors to ensure smooth delivery of technical outcomes and compliance with service management processes.
Highly Desirable Criteria
- Extensive, hands-on experience with Check Point firewalls, including builds, upgrades, troubleshooting, and policy optimisation.
- Proven experience with Palo Alto technologies in enterprise-scale deployments.
- Strong background in Cisco networking, including routing, switching, and integration with firewall platforms.
- Demonstrated use of AlgoSec (or equivalent NSPM tools) for policy management, risk analysis, and compliance.
- Proficiency with SolarWinds or similar tools for firewall monitoring and performance reporting.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience with F5 GTM, LTM, and WAF solutions.
- Familiarity with Secure Web Gateway technologies and proxy solutions.
- Knowledge of ServiceNow and ITIL processes including incident, problem, change, and configuration management.
- Understanding of cyber security frameworks and governance processes such as NIST, ISO27000, and Essential Eight.
- Ability to work effectively in high-pressure, time-sensitive project environments.
Skills and Experience
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to assess complex technical requirements.
- Proven experience providing third-level technical support and expert guidance in enterprise environments.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage and influence technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong leadership and collaboration capabilities within multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to research emerging technologies and recommend enhancements to network security strategy.
